*It has often been said that success is nothing without someone you love to share it with. Shaquille O’Neal is proof this statement carries weight, as he reminisced over his failed marriage and the loss of his family over making what he labeled ‘a lot of dumbass mistakes.”

The topic was among those discussed during (now-retired) Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce’s recent appearance on “The Big Podcast with Shaq.” During the episode, Kelce touched on the idea of retiring as he considered life after football.

It was then that O’Neal gave the football fixture a bit of advice as he looked back at his own life.

“My advice to you is if you are going to retire, accept it, enjoy your family brother,” he said.

“I made a lot of dumba** mistakes to where I lost my family and I didn’t have anybody. That’s not the case for you. So enjoy your beautiful wife, enjoy your beautiful kids, and never dwell on what we had. What we had is what we got, you got the ring, and people know who you are. Enjoy it.”

O’Neal’s words come from a very personal place. The former Los Angeles Laker shared his life for a time with Shaunie Henderson (formerly O’Neal). The pair, who were married from 2002 to 2011, share hare four children: Shareef, Shaqir, Amirah and Me’arah.

In addition, The Jasmine Brand notes O’Neal’s role as a father figure to Henderson’s son Myles from a previous relationship as well as the daughter (Taahirah) he fathered with his ex-girlfriend Arnetta Yardbourgh.

Years after splitting with Henderson, O’Neal still regrets losing his former wife.

“I was an idiot … I lost my whole family … been in a 100,000 square foot house by myself. But again, the way I was raised: stop, man up, deal with it … that’s my advice to you,” he told Kelce.

O’Neal’s reflection on his past marks comes years after he commented on it during an April 2022 episode of the “The Pivot Podcast.”

“I have two wonderful women who have given me beautiful, gorgeous children. I have to protect and I have to provide and I have to love them forever,” he stated.

Regarding Henderson, O’Neal admits the blame falls on him with the end of their marriage.

“I was bad. She was awesome. It was all me, he added. We don’t need to talk about what I was doing but I was not protecting her and protecting those vows. Sometimes when you live that double life you get caught up. I’m not gonna say it was her, it was all me. She did exactly what she was supposed to do and gave me beautiful kids, took care of the house, and took care of corporate stuff. It was all me.”
