*Prince’s estate has refused to approve a Netflix documentary about the late singer due to its nine-hour length, which exceeds the originally agreed-upon six-hour series.
Director Ezra Edelman’s final cut is three hours longer than planned, leading to a dispute with the estate, Page Six reports.
Although Netflix is hopeful for a compromise, Edelman is reportedly unwilling to shorten the film. Emmy winner Ava DuVernay was initially set to direct the project, but Edelman took over four years ago.
Edelman (OJ: Made in America) has hosted screenings for family and friends of the Prince project.
Per Page Six, “the estate’s executors have taken issue with not only the length of the career-spanning doc but also inaccuracies about its famously private subject,” the outlet writes, citing a Puck report.
Edelman needs approval from Prince’s family and those who manage the late singer’s rights before the documentary is publicly released.
An insider said the estate is “incredibly nitpicky.”
“You never saw Prince release anything subpar. Everything was carefully curated and fine-tuned. The estate still holds that high standard,” the source told Page Six, claiming the current version of the project “does not accurately portray the legendary Prince.”
Prince died at age 57 from an accidental fentanyl overdose in 2016.
