*In a candid and heartfelt interview on Shannon Sharpe‘s popular podcast “Club Shay Shay,” actress Meagan Good opened up about her tumultuous journey through love, loss, and personal growth.
Known for her profound presence in the entertainment industry, Good has experienced significant shifts in both her professional and personal life over the last 30 years. From her early days as a child star in cult classics such as “Eve’s Bayou,” “Cousin Skeeter,” and more to becoming a treasured personality in Black Hollywood, her career trajectory has been nothing short of inspirational.
However, it was not just her career that evolved; her personal life underwent dramatic transformations as well. In 2012, while working on the set of “Jumping the Broom,” Good began a relationship with pastor and producer DeVon Franklin, who was an executive for the distribution company behind the film.
Their love blossomed quickly, leading to a marriage filled with hope and faith. Good recounted the divine guidance she received.
“The first thing God told me was that it was time to get out of that relationship. The second thing that God told me was that it was time to be celibate. The third thing God told me was that DeVon was my husband.”
Despite her unwavering commitment, the union came to an unexpected end in December 2021. The divorce, which was finalized in June 2022, left Good grappling with confusion and disappointment.
“My divorce shook me to my core… Lord, you asked me to be celibate, and I was; you told me to marry, and I married that person. I tried to do everything to the best of my ability, and no, I didn’t do everything perfect, but I don’t know if I could do anything differently if I’m being honest,” she told Sharpe.
Good revealed that part of her pain stemmed from an unresolved childhood fear. “My greatest fear was that my husband would leave me after 10 years of marriage, similar to my dad leaving my mom, …and that’s exactly what happened.”
Addressing the emotional turmoil following her separation, Good emphasized the importance of prayer and self-reflection in her healing process.
“It was a lot of rediscovering God and realizing that sometimes the way that we see and understand things is not that it’s not true, but we come into different seasons,” she explained. Over time, her perspective on the marriage evolved. “At the time, I was so mad at DeVon, but now I think what he did was brave. To grow where we were supposed to grow, we should’ve been married for that specific time. I can now look at DeVon and say ‘That’s a good person’ and be grateful for our time.”
As she navigated through this painful chapter, Good found comfort and joy in new beginnings. She has since started dating actor Jonathan Majors, known for his roles in critically acclaimed films and series. Their relationship has been a source of support and motivation for the actress: “Jonathan was the one who told me to ask for a certain amount to do my newest movie,” Good shared, highlighting his influence on her professional decisions.
Meagan Good’s latest project, “Tyler Perry’s Divorce In Black,” seems to mirror her real-life experiences, adding another layer to her already storied career. In addition to a fresh romance, she is thriving on the professional front, with Majors standing by her side: “My man is sexy to me!” she gleefully exclaimed to Sharpe, indicating the joy and fulfillment she presently feels.
Overall, Meagan Good’s appearance on Club Shay Shay offered an unfiltered glimpse into her struggles and triumphs. By facing her fears head-on and embracing growth, she continues to inspire both her fans and peers. Her story is one of resilience, faith, and ultimately, the courage to find happiness amidst life’s unpredictable twists and turns.
