*While many women would claim they were called beautiful 1000+ times before they met their husbands, Fantasia Barrino had to wait until meeting her husband before she heard “You are beautiful” directed her way.
The couple has been married for 8 years, and the “Color Purple’ actress has only good things to say about her husband, Kendall Taylor, with whom she shares a 2-year-old daughter, Keziah.
The mother of three recently opened up about finding true love in an interview with People.
The R&B singer narrated how she went through a momentary panic earlier this month while traveling alongside producers Oprah Winfrey and Steven Spielberg to promote “The Color Purple,” a film adaptation of the Tony-winning Broadway musical. The 39-year-old called home to inquire about her family. Her husband picked up the call, and it sounded like there was much screaming.
“The first thing I thought was that something [bad] had happened, so I immediately hung up to prepare myself,” she tells PEOPLE in this week’s issue.
After preparing herself for the worst, she called back and urged her husband to tell her what was wrong at home. It was then he broke the news to her that she got nominated for a Golden Globe.
“I literally started crying. Like, the ugly cry,” she explained.
In the movie, Barrino stars as Celie, a Black woman in the 1920s South who struggles with vicious abuse, racism, and low self-esteem before she finds her voice, power, and freedom with the help of other women. The film is based on Alice Walker’s 1982 novel that won a Pulitzer Prize,
Barrino contends that she has much in common with the characters she plays in the movie regarding family situations, losing things, and feeling ugly and unseen. But unlike Celie, Barrino says she is lucky to have her husband, Taylor, who helped her heal from some of her old wounds.
“My husband’s been in the trenches with me,” Barrino adds. “He came into my life and was the first person that ever called me beautiful and a queen every day, even when I felt like I didn’t look good or my hair was all over my head.”
It’s why she couldn’t have been happier when he broke the news to her that she was nominated for an award.
“He’s invested so much into my life and I feel like he’s my soulmate,” she added.
