*Janet Jackson’s recent comments questioning Kamala Harris’ ethnicity have enraged fringe liberals, but her issues with the vice president may date back to 2004.
The tension could stem from a resurfaced interview where Harris, then a San Francisco Deputy City Attorney, made remarks about Michael Jackson’s child molestation trial. In 2003, the King of Pop was charged with seven counts of child molestation. At the time, Harris had no involvement in the case but weighed in on the trial as a legal expert.
According to TMZ, Harris said in the video clip, “In general, the child will be able to recall and recollect some detail, the incident and that is persuasive to a jury, even if it is the only testimony that is available.”
Michael denied the allegations and pleaded not guilty. He was ultimately acquitted of all charges in 2005, but Janet seemingly hasn’t forgotten Harris’ remarks, which may explain the singer’s recent comments about her race.
The Guardian published the singer’s controversial statement on Saturday after the interviewer asked Jackson for her thoughts on Harris potentially becoming the first Black woman to serve as U.S. president.
“Well, you know what they supposedly said?” Jackson is quoted as saying. “She’s not Black. That’s what I heard. That she’s Indian.”
The author explained that she corrected Jackson, clarifying that while Harris has Indian heritage, she is also Black.
“[Harris’] father’s white,” Jackson replied. “That’s what I was told. I mean, I haven’t watched the news in a few days. I was told that they discovered her father was white.”
After her comments went viral, an unauthorized “apology” was issued by Mo Elmasri who claimed to be Janet’s manager. However, Jackson’s representative stated that Elmasri has no affiliation with the superstar.
According to Janet’s rep, her brother Randy Jackson is her manager. In an email statement to Yahoo Entertainment, Elmasri claimed to be Janet’s former business manager and that he was fired by Janet and Randy Jackson after he denounced her remarks about Harris.
“The disagreements occurred between me and Janet after her meeting with the Guardian and her racist and unbalanced statements,” said Elmasri. “As her business manager, I decided to help her reform her image and calm public opinion and her fans. But then she and Randy issued a decision and I was fired,” he added.
