Ava DuVernay & Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor Talk Filming Their Emotional Drama ‘Origin’ | EURexclusiveWATCH

*Writer and director Ava DuVernay has masterfully created another film, “Origin,” starring Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor that will pull at your emotions while delivering transformative information.

DuVernay’s “Origin tells the story of author Isabel Wilkerson and her journey of writing her New York Times bestseller Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents.

Wilkerson is a Pulitzer Prize-winning Journalist and author. During the aftermath of the Trayvon Martin case, she was approached by an old editor requesting her to write a piece about the events.

Wilkerson was hesitant to do so and felt the situation brought more questions than answers, which led her to research the origins of race and racism in this country. While trying to make sense of this idea she discovered what a caste system was and how that system is more of what we deal with as a society.

We spoke with DuVerney about how she creates a film with heavy subject matter while still making the material engaging.

“There’s no magic to it. I just get in there and do the work and figure it out,” said DuVernay. “I’m just trying to do my best on the page.”

Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor spoke about what it was like playing Wilkerson.

“What was clear for me in how we executed it…essentially she went through this grief in a short amount of time. I believe grief essentially propelled that search [and the research for Wilkerson’s book].

Ellis-Taylor added: And grief which expressed itself in this kind of memorialization to her mother, her cousin, and Bret. It was love,” said Ellis-Taylor.

She went on to add how through Wilkerson’s grief, her love for her family was at the root of everything – and love helped her through.

Origin is in theaters starting January 19.
