21 Savage Drops Music Video/Trailer for ‘American Dream’ Biopic

*Rapper 21 Savage has released a new music video-style trailer for an upcoming biopic, “American Dream: The 21 Savage Story.”

The project follows the Grammy-winning artist’s experience of being detained by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in 2019. The “American Dream” video features Donald Glover as 21 Savage, and “Stranger Things” star Caleb McLaughlin portrays the younger version of the rapper.

A Lionsgate logo is played ahead of the trailer, but it remains unclear if the footage is indeed part of a larger project, as Variety points out. The end of the trailer teases a release on “Independence Day.” Watch the music video above.

ICE officials detained the hip-hop star (real name She’yaa Bin Abraham Joseph) for living in the US illegally for years on an expired visa. Per TMZ, “Authorities later claimed the rapper threw out a bottle of codeine during that ICE arrest … and they say a handgun was also found in his vehicle,” the outlet writes.

“His whole public persona is false. He actually came to the U.S. from the U.K. as a teen and overstayed his visa,” an ICE official said about 21 Savage in 2019, according to SandraRose.com.

Recalling the moment of the arrest, the Atlanta-based artist said in 2019: “I was just driving. And I just seen guns and blue lights. And, then, I was in the back of a car. And I was gone.

“They didn’t — they didn’t say nothing. They just said, ‘We got Savage.’ It was definitely targeted,” 21 Savage added.

21 Savage’s legal team said he “won his freedom” after he was released from ICE detainment. He discussed the ordeal in an exclusive interview with ABC News – watch below.
