*The platform formally known as Twitter (now called X) is rolling out a “Not a Bot” program in New Zealand and the Philippines, where new users will be charged $1 per year to send tweets.

X confirmed that the new “Not a Bot” subscription is currently being tested in both regions. The company said the new fees will not apply to existing users, for now.

“It is not a profit driver,” X said.

“As of October 17th, 2023 we’ve started testing ‘Not A Bot,’ a new subscription method for new users in two countries,” X explained. “This new test was developed to bolster our already significant efforts to reduce spam, manipulation of our platform and bot activity. This will evaluate a potentially powerful measure to help us combat bots and spammers on X, while balancing platform accessibility with the small fee amount.”

The move is part of an effort to combat bots and spam.

“Subscription options have proven to be the main solution that works at scale,” X said in a post.

Under the subscription plan, new users must verify their phone numbers and pay the $1 fee if they want to like tweets, retweet posts, and save bookmarks. Those who don’t pay will have “read only” access.

Meanwhile, rumor has it that at least “one bot farm that is based in the SE Asian country that does a lot of celebrity boosting now has 10,000 new accounts that have been given free reign and will never be banned. This goes along with their 15,000 “verified” accounts that have already generated twenty times the revenue of the initial cost,” per Crazy Days and Nights.
