*Rapper Ice Spice has responded to critics who believe her swift rise to fame can be attributed to her looks.

The Bronx-born artist blew up in 2022 with her viral hit “Munch (Feelin’ U),” and has since collaborated with Taylor Swift and Nicki Minaj. Many believe the level of success she’s at now is not based on talent but because she’s light-skinned.

Ice Spice — whose real name is Isis Naija Gaston — responded to the criticism in a recent interview with Teen Vogue.

“I have seen those opinions. feel like that’s not something personal to me,” she said.

“I feel like that’s been the conversation for generations and forever, since the beginning of time,” Ice Spice continued. “I try not to feed into negativity because I also see that when people are trying to make that point, it’s not out of a good place. [They end up putting] somebody else down.”

Despite the controversy surrounding her breakout in the music industry, Ice Spice says she remains focused on being humble.

“I’m most proud of staying grounded so far because I’ve already been through so many things that I know a lot of people would’ve lost their f*cking minds,” she explained in the Teen Vogue interview.

“The whole lifestyle change is super drastic, especially coming from where I come from, not coming from sht and not having a lot growing up, to now — it’s the complete opposite…. Even though it’s a positive change, it’s still a change,” she added.

“A lot of people be trying to compare me to people that’s way older than me or people that been in this sh*t way longer than me. I feel like I know who I am,” she explained.

“I’m really that bitch, and I tell myself that all the time because I learned that I have to know who I am, because everybody else gon’ try to tell me who I am. So I got to know first.”
