Get Ready for ‘The Blackening’ A Juneteenth Comedy Horror Film | Watch

*”The Blackening” is the new Lionsgate comedy horror film that centers on a group of college friends who get together for a Juneteenth reunion that turns deadly.

It’s based on the 2018 short film by the improv comedy troupe 3Peat. Directed by Tim Story (“Fantastic Four,” “BarberShop”) and with a screenplay by Tracy Oliver (“Harlem”) and Dewayne Perkins (“Brooklyn Nine-nine”) this film challenges the traditional horror movie tropes.

The star-studded cast includes; Grace Byers (“Harlem”) Jermaine Fowler (“Coming to America 2″) Melvin Gregg (“Snowfall”) X Mayo (“American Auto”), Dewayne Perkins (“The Upshaws”) Antoinette Robertson (”Dear White People”) Sinqua Walls (“White Men Can’t Jump”) Jay Pharoah (“SNL”) and Yvonne Orji (“Insecure”)

Robertson portrays Lisa, the uptight lawyer who still has a thing for her college ex Nmandi (Walls) Byers is Allison, the biracial friend who always tries to show her Blackness.  In a recent interview with EUR, the cast, we had the opportunity to explore their favorite aspects of Black culture when experienced in group settings.

Robinson shared that shared energy and a feeling of security are what she loves about Black individuals coming together.

“It doesn’t matter if it’s spades, dominoes, sharing meals, or cracking jokes; the ability to truly be yourself when the culture surrounds you is what I love.”

Walls added that anything that involves all the above and dancing is his favorite. Byers said it’s a combination of the two. It’s one of the things they all loved about “The Blackening,” that it’s a moment for the culture that you immediately connect to, whether that’s through a character, the friendship dynamics, or how you would react if you were locked in a cabin in the woods.

“The Blackening” hits theatres Juneteenth weekend on Friday, June 16.
