*Derek Luke’s latest film “Rare Objects,” tackles mental illness, sexual assault, recovery, and addiction, and is based on Kathleen Tessaro’s novel of the same name.

The film, directed by actress Kate Holmes, who also stars in it, is “a story about a unique friendship that centers around a young woman (Julia Mayorga) who reclaims her own sense of self through her journey of self-discovery that involves a new job, new friends and healing,” per the official synopsis.

Holmes made her directorial debut in 2015 with a 30 for 30 short about Olympic gymnast Nadia Comaneci titled “Eternal Princess.” The following year she released her feature film debut with “All We Had.” Speaking to MovieMaker about the moment she realized she wanted to direct her own movies, Holmes explained… ”I remember meeting with a friend of mine, the producer Jane Rosenthal, about 10 or 11 years ago, and she brought it up to me. It’s something I had thought about here and there, having a lot of experience being led by some really great directors and having taken a lot of wisdom from them.”

Holmes continued, “I thought it sounded overwhelming, so I started small and did a 30 for 30 short. And just being behind the camera and in the editing room, and really shaping and crafting a piece of work, was something I really enjoyed. So that led me to my first feature,” she explained.

“I really enjoyed the process of working with the actors and seeing what they brought to the characters that I had missed. That’s the beauty of actors — they read something and they interpret it in their own way, and they bring their whole self to it. It’s so exciting because then the scenes become something far deeper than you had imagined,” she said.

“And it was so new to me to work with a cinematographer and craft a story visually. I started to get hooked on the excitement of finding new ways to get ideas across,” Holmes continued.
