Emmy Winning Costume Designer Dana Campbell Talks Working with Stars of New Comedy ‘Back on the Strip’ | Watch

*The new comedy “Back on the Strip” stars Wesley Snipes as a man seeking a return to his former glory days as a stripper on the famous Las Vegas strip.

We caught up with Emmy award-winning costume designer Dana Campbell to speak about her career as a Black woman in the industry and working on the film described as a “cosmic gumbo of The Full Monty, Magic Mike and a bag of chips.”

“Back on the Strip” also features Tiffany Haddish, JB Smoove, Faizon Love, Bill Bellamy, Gary Owen, and a surprise cameo from Kevin Hart.

As Whattowatch.com reports, the story centers on Verna, “a single mother who sends her broken-hearted son Merlin to Vegas, determined to help him make his dreams come true as a professional magician. But a chance meeting at a run-down hotel with Mr. Big – the front man of the once notorious Black male stripper crew known as “The Chocolate Chips” gives young Merlin a new chance to be in the spotlight.” Check out the trailer above.

Directed by Chris Spencer in his feature film directing debut, “Back on the Strip” premieres exclusively in theaters on August 18.

“We have assembled an amazing cast with the industry’s greatest comedic talent. It is a privilege to direct this film, one I co-wrote that has a cast of this caliber for my first feature film,” Spencer said previously when the project was announced in 2021.

When BET.com recently asked Spencer how he feels about his directorial debut, the filmmaker said: “I feel great! To have my first feature with a decent budget and to have such an all-star cast with Faizon Love, Tiffany Haddish, Wesley Snipes, Bill Bellamy, JB Smoove, Gary Owens, and Spence Moore. This newcomer Raigan Harris, you may have seen her on “Grown-ish,” Ryan Alexander, who plays the villain — I would say it was a dream come true, but I never dreamt this. I never dreamt I would be so fortunate that my first feature would have such an all-star cast.”

Spencer said the movie is a “love story.”

It’s a love story about this young man who wants to pursue his dreams as a magician. He gets to Legas, and his dreams have been derailed because of an occurrence that I don’t want to give away, which allows Wesley Snipes’ character to see him and says he needs to be the new frontman of this group of a male dance revue with Faizon Love, Gary Owens on and Bill Bellamy… the young man has a gift,” Spencer explained.
