*Black advocacy groups are spreading awareness about the anti-Black rhetoric on Chinese social media.

Several racist videos have been discovered by Human Rights Watch on Chinese social media platforms including Bilibili, Douyin, Kuaishou, Weibo, and Xiaohongshu, according to The Guardian

HRW analyzed hundreds of videos mocking Black people with stereotypical images. As Black Enterprise reports, popular videos include “Chinese savior” content, showing people acting as “primitive” Africans. In some videos, interracial relationships between Black men and Chinese women are demonized.

Some videos highlight how Chinese people are called traitors online for supporting Black victims of racism in China.

According to BE, a BBC Africa Eye documentary exposed Chinese vlogger Lu Ke as the creator of videos featuring Malawian children being sold on Chinese social media. He was arrested in 2022 and the following year, Lu was convicted on 14 charges, including child trafficking and procurement of children for use of entertainment, and deported from the country.

As Black Enterprise reports, Lu coached the children featured in one video to repeat anti-black messages in Mandarin, such as “I am Black monster, my IQ is low.”

Per The Guardian, HRW said: “The amount and extremity of racist content on the Chinese internet suggest that the platforms either are not meeting their own standards banning racist content, or that their policies are inadequate when addressing racist content, both contrary to their human rights responsibilities.”

In a statement, a senior China researcher at Human Rights Watch, Yaqiu Wang, said the Chinese government has a double standard regarding racism.

“The Chinese government likes to tout China-Africa anti-colonial solidarity and unity, but at the same time, ignores pervasive hate speech against Black people on the Chinese internet,” Wang said, according to Al Jazeera.

“Beijing should recognize that undertaking investments in Africa and embracing China-Africa friendship won’t undo harm caused by unaddressed racism.”
