*When a Hollywood diva reckons with the underbelly of stardom and the constant quest to remain relevant and financially secure, it makes for the perfect setting for Ava: The Secret Conversations, now showing at the Geffen Playhouse.
Playwright Elizabeth McGovern stars as Ava Gardner, one of Hollywood’s Golden Age sweethearts, MGM contract starlet, and heartthrob for three famous husbands: Mickey Rooney, Arte Shaw, and Frank Sinatra.
“Ava” is told through the eyes of writer Peter Evans, the character who was contracted to ghostwrite the memoirs of the lofty star.
Aaron Costa Ganis stars as Peter and also does triple duty as he masterfully intones Rooney, Shaw, and Sinatra opposite Ms. McGovern’s commanding performance of Ava through the colorful chapters of her life.
