*We caught up with Anthony Mackie to chop it up about his new Peacock series “Twisted Metal,” which is based on the popular PlayStation video game franchise.

The series stars Anthony Mackie as John Doe who, per the press release, “drives across the Divided States of America in search of a place to belong. You’ll laugh as an enigmatic woman named Quiet, played by Stephanie Beatriz, throws John’s world for a loop after a chance encounter, forcing the two together and changing both their lives for the better.”

Per the official synopsis, “Twisted Metal” is a half-hour live-action TV series based on an original take by Rhett Reese & Paul Wernick and written by Michael Jonathan Smith, about a motor-mouthed outsider offered a chance at a better life, but only if he can successfully deliver a mysterious package across a post-apocalyptic wasteland. With the help of a badass axe-wielding car thief, he’ll face savage marauders driving vehicles of destruction and other dangers of the open road, including a deranged clown who drives an all too familiar ice cream truck.”

Mackie stars and EP’s the series that also features Stephanie Beatriz, Thomas Haden Church, Will Arnett, and Joe Seanoa. Series guest stars include Neve Campbell, Richard Cabral, Mike Mitchell, Tahj Vaughans, and Lou Beatty Jr.

“John Doe is kind of like a man-child. He stopped aging at 16,” Mackie explained to Syfy. “There’s a certain level of youthfulness, there’s a certain level of unknowingness that he has about him. That’s really beautiful and it was fun to play. He’s a glass-half-full kind of guy.”

As Complex reports, showrunner and writer Michael Jonathan Smith gushed about the series in a letter addressed to the media.

“The year was 2001,” Smith said. “Weezer had welcomed fans to an Island in the Sun. Shrek was an all-star at the box office. Pizza Hut had delivered a salami pizza to the International Space Station. And I was a sixteen year old nerd who had just purchased Twisted Metal: Black. The second I inserted that disc into my PlayStation 2, I was transported to a chaotic demolition derby that left me cackling with glee at the chaos of it all. That inescapable feeling of joy is what I wanted to bring to life in our show. “

During our exclusive conversation with Mackie, he touched on his approach to bringing this video game to the small screen, and what he’s most excited about viewers experiencing when the show drops this week. Watch the interview via the clip below.

All 10 episodes of “Twisted Metal” hit Peacock on July 27.
