Singer Serayah Talks New Single (‘Miss You’) and Helping Those in Need

*Singer, actress, model, Serayah just wrapped up the final season on Fox’s hit show, “Empire” where she played Tiana Brown. Ironically, on the show, Tiana had a successful singing career. Which makes an easy transition for Serayah.

“’Empire’ was an amazing journey for me. I always compare it to a more glamorous version of college for me because I started when I was 19 so a year after graduating high school I was into filming (the show). I moved away. I was in Chicago. I grew artistically and spiritually. I’m so excited for what’s next. I’ve been trying to keep myself sane by recording music and doing little productive things I think about.”

Now that the series has ended, the singer has been able to spend time on her solo projects. One of them, “Never Be The Same,” is a song Serayah initially recorded solo. The collabo between her and rapper Simyai came about when she and her team collectively felt the song would be even more amazing if they added another verse to it.

“I had already recorded the song and me and my team were just thinking it definitely calls for a feature. I actually had a second verse to it. But we were like, ‘man, if we could have a feature on the second verse…’ We were thinking of a bunch of different artists that we could possibly reach out to. She (Simyai) was actually in the studio and I was like, send her the record and see if she likes it. She ended up liking it and she got on it and I’m really excited she did because it made it much more of a vibe.”

What inspired the single, “Miss You?”

“It’s kind of like one of those records where we’re kind of explaining how we’re just gonna do us. Be our authentic selves.”

Since the release of the single, responses from fans have been great, she says.

“It’s been amazing! A lot of people have been loving the song, reposting the song, even downloading it. I’m really grateful for that. The video … it’s a crazy time right now with corona and being quarantined. We just wanted to make it fun. Lighten people’s hearts a little.”

Serayah’s new single, “Miss You” brings a more vulnerable approach. The song is about missing someone you haven’t been around which many can relate while under the stay at home orders.

“It’s definitely bringing that vulnerability I think that I’m officially ready to share in my music and my artistry. ‘Miss You’ is definitely a summer feel-good record. Very positive and I’m so glad it’s featuring Blac Youngsta.”

When Serayah isn’t working on one of her projects, she spends time serving throughout the community with “Our Deserving Love” founded by her mother, Kanika in 2018.

“It’s always a moment of gratitude when I can help someone else or give a meal. It helps a lot because it brings me back, grounded into the things that matter and I realize that there’s so many people that don’t have what I have or the next person. It makes me stay really focus in what’s more important and serving the community is that for us.

Deserving Love’s main mission is to help single parents and single-family homes. A non- profit for the community reference for referrals. Also, help monetarily in many ways, as well as provides vouchers that can be used on day to day expenses that end up adding up, such as bus vouchers or paying a light bill.
