EURweb was on the scene at Universal Studios Hollywood to give our audience a one-of-a-kind access to the fun and fast-paced world of “Hairspray Live!” So yes, the countdown to “Hairspray Live!” Wednesday (12-07-16) at 8/7c on NBC … is underway.
Stars like Kristin Chenoweth and Sean Hayes will take viewers on a guided tour of everything involved in putting together NBC’s “Hairspray” telecast. Jennifer Hudson, Harvey Fierstein, Ariana Grande, Martin Short, Derek Hough, Rosie O’Donnell and newcomer Maddie Baillio who stars as Tracy Turnblad round out the large ensemble cast.
“Hairspray Live!” is about a teenager Tracy Turnblad’s and her dream to dance on “The Corny Collins Show,” a local TV program. Against all odds Tracy wins a role on the show, becomes an overnight sensation and meets a colorful array of characters as she attempts to integrate the all-white dance show.
Hairspray’s message is about inclusion and diversity. It is quite interesting the timing of this production considering we are facing a lot of looming undertones of racism and classicism now in our country.

This cast tackles the origin of the story by putting a fresh spin on a classic. Emmy Award-winning live television director Alex Rudzinski (“Dancing with the Stars”) will join Tony Award-winning director Kenny Leon (“The Wiz Live!”) for the Dec.7 live telecast. Craig Zadan and Neil Meron (Oscar-winning “Chicago,” “The Wiz Live!”) are executive producers of “Hairspray Live!” Harvey Fierstein will also provide a new teleplay and Tony winner Jerry Mitchell (“Kinky Boots”) will serve as choreographer for the live production with Tony winners Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman handling the music and lyrics.
EUR associate Herica Thompson caught up with Jennifer Hudson (Motormouth Maybelle) and some of her cast mates to talk about why you should watch NBC on December 7th, 2016 at 8/7c for “Hairspray Live!” Check them out in the video above.
