*President Donald Trump acknowledged that Americans could face potential attacks on U.S. soil as tensions with Iran continue.
In a Time cover story titled “Trump’s War,” the president discussed the risks tied to the ongoing military conflict. When asked whether Americans should worry about retaliation, he replied simply, “I guess.”
He added that authorities routinely prepare for such possibilities: “But I think they’re worried about that all the time. We think about it all the time. We plan for it. But yeah, you know, we expect some things.”
Trump also addressed the reality of wartime casualties. “Like I said, some people will die,” he said. “When you go to war, some people will die.”
Trump’s comments came as the conflict escalated abroad, with six U.S. service members recently killed in a drone strike following combined U.S. and Israeli operations in the region, PEOPLE reports.
Meanwhile, Trump said he believes the U.S. should help select Iran’s next leader. “We’re going to have to choose that person along with Iran. We’re going to have to choose that person,” he told Reuters.
Trump compared the situation to the U.S. role in replacing Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. Regarding a potential successor to the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, one candidate is his son Mojtaba Khamenei. Trump told Axios, “They are wasting their time. Khamenei’s son is a lightweight. I have to be involved in the appointment, like with Delcy in Venezuela.”
He emphasized the need for a leader who could provide long-term stability. “We want to be involved in the process of choosing the person who is going to lead Iran into the future, so we don’t have to go back every five years and do this again and again. We want somebody that’s going to be great for the people, great for the country,” Trump said.
