*When it comes to family, few do it as authentically—or as openly—as the Braxtons. In Season 2 of “The Braxtons,” which premiered Friday, October 10 on We TV, Toni, Towanda, Trina, Tamar, and Ms. Evelyn reunite in hopes of healing after tragedy. But as they’ve proven over the years, love often comes with a side of laughter, tension, and unfiltered truth.
For Trina Braxton, finding balance between the lighter, joyful moments and the deeper emotional challenges was just another part of what it means to be family. “We are not unlike any other family out there, any other traditional family out there. We have our ups, we have our downs, we have our happy moments, we have our negative moments, but you have to learn how to navigate through them based on learning how to love someone through their own personal personality.”
Season two captures those emotional highs and lows, especially as the family rallies around Towanda’s wedding. The celebration, a major storyline this season, became a joyful milestone after years of loss and heartbreak. “I was glad that I wasn’t having another wedding because I’ve done it three times and I’m done,” Trina joked. “But it’s great to see my sister happy and in a relationship with her forever person. I think everyone should experience that. She is literally glowing. I don’t know where her forehead stops and the rest of her head continues because all of it glows all over the place.”
Still, the absence of their sister Traci, who died in 2022 at age 50 after a battle with esophageal cancer, continues to shape the family’s story and healing journey. “I’ll say it’s still challenging, especially for me. I was there when she took her last breath, and seeing that was just heavy for me,” Trina shared.
She reflected on the small ways Traci’s spirit continues to be present: “We miss a lot of the Traci-isms. She’s definitely missed. Her energy is definitely missed, but she already told us she wanted us to go on. She already told us, I’m still with you wherever I go. And you see little glimpses of her, no matter what we do. Traci is always with me because Traci loved hummingbirds. So all the sisters have a hummingbird necklace, and we have a bit of her ash in each of our necklaces. So she comes with us everywhere we go.”
With the Braxtons, unresolved emotions are often matched with candid conversations. This season, tensions resurface and lessons in forgiveness take center stage. “I used to think that forgiveness was for the other person. It’s not. I’ve learned that it’s for yourself because if you can forgive another person and be finished with it, then it doesn’t have that weight or burden on you to be busy being mad and unforgiving,” she explained. “Communication is definitely key. You have to talk about things, and you can’t just sweep them under the rug because every time you step on that mound, it keeps getting heavier and heavier, but nothing has ever been addressed.”
Now older, wiser, and more intentional, Trina says the family is focused on setting boundaries and letting go of grudges. “Let’s talk about it and let’s set boundaries,” she added. “I don’t want to be 80 years old, fussing and fighting with my sister over something. I can’t even remember what we’re fussing and fighting about.”
Even through the toughest moments, Trina believes the Braxton legacy lies in showing up for one another, on screen and off. “Because that’s what family is about, showing up for each other, even when it’s hard, even when you don’t want to, even when you’re mad,” she said.
“Because it doesn’t just affect us as a sistership. We have nieces and nephews. We have children that are watching. We have another demographic of age groups. We have 21 and 24-year-olds who are watching how to manage relationships with the people that they have in their lives. It is up to us to be an encouragement and to be that outlet for them to say, Oh my gosh, this person made me mad, but guess what? I can say, I’m sorry, first. It’s not going to hurt anybody. It doesn’t cost anything. It’s free. It’s free to say, I’m sorry, first.”
With heartfelt moments, emotional breakthroughs, and unshakable bonds, season two of “The Braxtons” brings viewers back into a family whose strength has always been rooted in love and the courage to keep growing together.
