*A California appeals court has rejected Tory Lanez’s challenge to his conviction for shooting Megan Thee Stallion, affirming the rapper’s guilty verdict on three felony counts. According to The Associated Press, the ruling, issued on Wednesday by a three-judge panel from the California 2nd District Court of Appeal, upheld the 2022 conviction of the 33-year-old rapper.
Lanez, whose legal name is Daystar Peterson, was found guilty of assault with a semiautomatic handgun, having a loaded and unregistered firearm in a vehicle, and gross negligence in discharging his firearm. “Daystar Peterson is innocent,” his attorney, Crystal Morgan, told the judges during oral arguments in August. However, the appellate panel rejected every claim of error raised by the defense. Attorneys for Lanez may still ask the California Supreme Court to review the case.
In the court’s opinion, Judge Anne H. Egerton wrote that the trial court acted properly in allowing Megan Thee Stallion to testify about her emotions while taking the stand. The panel also upheld the court’s decision to admit a recording of a police interview with Kelsie Harris, a friend of both Megan and Lanez who was present during the shooting. “Once on the stand, to say Harris was a reluctant witness is an understatement,” Egerton noted. “To question after question, Harris replied she didn’t remember, couldn’t remember, or didn’t know.”

We reported earlier that Lanez was previously ordered to pay Megan’s legal fees after he was sanctioned for repeatedly interrupting her attorney and feigning ignorance during the April 9, 2025, deposition. The ruling requires him to cover Megan’s “reasonable attorney’s fees” related to the failed session
The deposition, linked to Megan’s defamation and cyberstalking lawsuit against blogger Milagro Gramz, quickly spiraled out of control. Lanez appeared via video from the California Men’s Colony near San Luis Obispo. The judge also ordered that a follow-up deposition be conducted under supervision by a magistrate judge.
Megan’s attorneys accused Lanez of making a “mockery of the proceedings.” They claimed his disruptive behavior violated basic courtroom norms and asked that he be held in contempt, but the judge stopped short of granting their full request, according to Rolling Stone.
Megan filed her defamation lawsuit against Gramz, accusing her of having waged a “coordinated campaign” to smear her reputation and harass her on Lanez’s behalf. This includes false claims about her mental health, allegations of alcoholism, and even the promotion of a deepfake pornographic video.
