*Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl halftime show was a certified highlight among many who watched the big game. Including Spike Lee.
Taking to Instagram, the filmmaker made his appreciation for Lamar’s performance known as he shouted the Compton rhymesayer out for referencing his production company 40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks during the show while drawing parallels between his work over the years and Lamar’s epic production.
“I want to thank my brother Kendrick for the 40 acres and a mule shoutout which has been the name of my production company since NYU grad film school,” Lee wrote on Instagram.
Spike added: “And I want to send a special shoutout to my Morehouse brother Samuel Jackson who started this Super Bowl Halftime extravaganza as Uncle Sam and you might’ve seen him as Dolmedes in Chi-Raq.”
Bottom line: Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl halftime show not only captivated millions but also earned high praise from iconic filmmaker Spike Lee, who took to Instagram to express his gratitude for Lamar’s nod to his production company, 40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks, during the performance, while also giving a special shoutout to Samuel Jackson for kicking off the halftime spectacle with his unforgettable Uncle Sam cameo.

“40 acres and a mule, this is bigger than the music,” Lamar told viewers and those watching the game at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans. “They tried to rig the game, but you can’t fake influence.”
“The term 40 acres and a mule was a proposal for reparations to former enslaved African-Americans in the aftermath of the civil war,” Lee added while voicing the history behind the key part of a wartime order proclaimed during the Civil War. “The proposal was intended to provide land and resources to provide land and resources to help free people achieve economic independence. This promise was ultimately broken. Happy Black His-Herstory.”
Although Lamar earned high marks from Lee, the rapper’s halftime show generated mixed reviews from Super Bowl watchers, who got what he was conveying versus those who had no clue what he was saying through his music.
Dissecting the intent of the halftime show, Lamar’s friend Dave Free revealed the intent of the performance was to try to convey “Black America” to the audience watching. A point that Lee has built his career on.
“The feel of it is Black America. What does Black America look like, and how to control that narrative of what it means to be Black in America versus what the world’s perspective of that is,” Free explained to the Wall Street Journal.
