*As wildfires continue to wreak havoc across California, the Eaton Fire has claimed another victim, bringing the confirmed death toll to ten.
The family of 66-year-old Victor Shaw discovered his body on Wednesday morning, tragically found on the side of the road near their home in Altadena, California, with a garden hose still clutched in his hand.
Victor Shaw had lived in the family home for nearly 55 years, which held countless memories for him and his loved ones.
His younger sister, Shari Shaw, described the harrowing moments leading up to Victor’s death, revealing how she tried to persuade him to evacuate with her as the flames from the Eaton Fire encroached upon their property.

Despite his health challenges, which made mobility difficult, Victor was determined to stay behind and protect his home.
“When I went back in and yelled out his name, he didn’t reply, and I had to get out because the embers were so big and flying like a firestorm—I had to save myself,” Shari recounted to KTLA’s Rick Chambers. As she fled, she looked back to see their family home engulfed in flames, knowing she had to escape the rapidly unfolding disaster.
“It looks like he was trying to save the home that his parents had for almost 55 years,” said family friend Al Tanner, who reflected on the tragic scene of Victor’s body being discovered.
The trauma of finding Victor was almost too much for Shari, who shared her grief.
“I fell to the ground, and I didn’t know—I didn’t want to look at him. They just told me that he was lying on the ground and that he looked serene as if he was at peace.”

Additionally, the rapidly spreading Lidia Fire in Antelope Valley has forced evacuations after burning at least 348 acres, and crews are managing the 43-acre Sunset Fire, which also led to evacuations in the Hollywood Hills.
The tragic loss of Victor Shaw serves as a stark reminder of the peril faced by residents in areas prone to wildfires.
