*A heated confrontation caught on video at a Michigan Smoothie King has ignited a national debate about political discrimination after two employees refused to serve a customer wearing a hoodie featuring President Donald Trump‘s name. The company has since terminated the workers and issued a firm statement reiterating its zero-tolerance policy for discrimination.
The incident occurred on March 1, 2026, at the Smoothie King location on Jackson Ave. in Ann Arbor. Erika Lindemyer began recording on her phone after she and her husband, Jake Lindemyer, were allegedly ignored at the counter. According to the couple, when they attempted to order, staff explicitly stated they felt “uncomfortable” serving them because of Jake’s pro-Trump hoodie.
In the footage, which has since gone viral across TikTok and X (formerly Twitter), an employee can be heard telling the couple, “Trump discriminates against us.” When Erika pushed back, calling the refusal “discrimination,” another employee asserted the business’s right to refuse service and told the couple, “The door’s right there.”
The exchange quickly escalated into a heated argument, culminating in the couple being asked to leave the premises without being served.

Smoothie King’s Swift Response
Following an immediate investigation, Smoothie King’s corporate office and the local franchise owner moved quickly to address the situation. In an official statement posted to X and shared with media outlets, the company confirmed the employees’ termination, according to Newsweek.
“Following an investigation into an incident involving a guest who was refused service at a franchised location in Michigan yesterday, the franchise owner has taken immediate action and the two employees involved are no longer with the business,” the statement read.
The company emphasized that the actions of the employees did not align with their brand values. “Both the franchise owner and Smoothie King corporate have reached out to the guest several times to apologize and will continue to follow up,” the statement continued. “The franchise owner is taking further action and enforcing mandatory retraining for all employees that outlines our guest experience standards.”
In a subsequent statement to press, a Smoothie King spokesperson reinforced their commitment to inclusivity, stating the brand aims to be “a place free of discrimination of any kind” regardless of “race, gender, religion and political affiliation.”
However …
While Smoothie King’s decision to fire the employees aligns with its corporate policy, legal experts point out that refusing service based on political views is not necessarily illegal in Michigan. Attorney Jonathan Marko explained that Michigan is not among the states that protect political speech in public accommodations, meaning private businesses can legally discriminate based on political viewpoint. He also noted that Smoothie King’s decision to terminate the employees was also within their legal rights as a private company.

The Customer Speaks Out
In the aftermath of the video’s rapid spread, Jake Lindemyer broke his silence in an exclusive interview with Newsweek. While expressing regret that the young employees lost their livelihoods, he maintained that the company’s decision was necessary.
He described the encounter as his first experience of harassment for publicly displaying his support for Trump, calling the workers “misguided.” Lindemyer told Newsweek that he was initially “confused” by the confrontation, adding that the company “had to make a shake-up” to prevent similar incidents from happening to others in the future.
Jake expressed regret that the young employees lost their jobs but understood the company’s decision.
“Our intentions were really to never have anyone fired from their job, but for that to happen to anyone else in the future possibly, I think Smoothie King may have made the right move”

Viral Backlash and a Defensive Fundraiser
The video, originally posted by Erika on TikTok and widely reposted on X by accounts such as @LeftismForU, has garnered hundreds of thousands of views. The incident has sparked intense online debates regarding free speech, the rights of private businesses to refuse service, and the limits of political expression in public spaces.
Complicating the narrative, one of the fired employees—identified in reports as 17-year-old Janiyah Mishelle—reportedly launched a GoFundMe campaign. In the fundraiser, she claimed she was a minor recorded without consent and has since faced a barrage of hate comments and online harassment for her refusal to serve the Trump supporters. The fundraiser has since garnered significant attention, adding another layer to the ongoing public discourse.
A Broader Cultural Flashpoint
This incident fits into a broader pattern of heightened tensions surrounding political expression in public spaces in 2026, a year marked by ongoing post-election cultural divides. It raises complex questions for consumers and businesses alike: Is refusing service based on political affiliation a protected form of free speech, or is it a discriminatory practice that corporate policies must address?
