*Award-winning film critic Shawn Edwards is marking a historic milestone with a new exhibit opening during Black History Month at the Black Archives of Mid-America.
Titled “The Life of a Film Critic: As Told by Shawn Edwards,” the exhibit documents his decades-long journey in film, television, and cultural advocacy, per the news release.
Edwards has spent more than 25 years reviewing movies and television on Fox 4 News, making him the longest-serving Black film critic in television history. The exhibit highlights how a lifelong passion for cinema evolved into a career that reshaped representation and visibility within entertainment journalism.
The installation offers an in-depth look at both Edwards’ professional and personal experiences. Visitors can explore the tools he used, the films he championed, notable interviews, and creative projects that defined his path. The exhibit serves as a curated time capsule, tracing his rise from Kansas City to Hollywood and back.

Reflecting on the timing of the exhibit, Edwards said, “I hit the benchmark of twenty-five years on television on Fox 4 News as a film critic. I thought that this was the perfect time to look back on my career ascension while reflecting on the things that inspired and motivated me along the way. It’s been an incredible ride and I want to share my experience as I embark on my latest challenge of bringing the Black Movie Hall of Fame to life.”
The exhibit also underscores Edwards’ broader impact on Black film culture. He is the co-founder of the African American Film Critics Association, creator of the Celebration of Black Cinema and Television, founder of the Juneteenth Film Festival, and creator and executive director of the Black Movie Hall of Fame.
Running in conjunction with the Black Movie Hall of Fame, the exhibit opens Monday, February 2, and continues through Friday, February 27, at the Black Archives of Mid-America. An opening reception is scheduled for Friday, February 6, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
The month concludes with a Black Movie Hall of Fame ‘Talk Back’ featuring Edwards on Saturday, February 28, at 6:00 p.m. at the Boone Theater. Additional details are available at blackarchives.org.
