Operator Falls Asleep on Crowded SFMTA Train in Tunnel
*This beyond-interesting story is just now breaking, but back on September 24, in San Francisco, an SFMTA train operator appeared to fall asleep while driving a packed light-rail train.
The train was heading through San Francisco’s Sunset Tunnel when the incident occurred. Surveillance footage shows the operator’s head leaning back, eyes closing, and long eyelashes fluttering.
The train’s speed quickly jumped to nearly 50 mph, far above the safe limit. Riders were tossed against walls and seats as the train barreled through a tight curve. As you can imagine, the footage, which surfaced yesterday (11-11-25), sparked outrage online.
Train Hits 50 MPH, Jolting Riders and Causing Panic
The train should have stopped at Duboce Avenue and Noe Street, but it blew past the station. Around 8:37 a.m., the video shows the operator nodding off about 90 seconds into the ride. Commuters on board were unaware of the growing danger as the train accelerated.
When the train reached the curve in the tunnel, it created intense shaking and loud thuds. Screams echoed as the train sped into daylight.
“I had people fall on me as we were going around the first curve,” one rider said.

Train Comes to Sudden Stop After Exiting Tunnel
Just past Walter Street on Duboce Avenue, the train came to a sudden stop. The halt threw some passengers from their seats, but no one was seriously injured. The train did not derail, despite the intense speed and curve.
The driver, now awake, quickly addressed passengers over the intercom. “I’m sorry… Relax, relax… We didn’t crash. Relax.” While no injuries were reported, the terrifying moments rattled many.
SFMTA Confirms Operator Fatigue Behind the Scare
In a November press release, the SFMTA confirmed that “operator fatigue” caused the incident. The operator has since been placed on non-driving status while the agency investigates. The footage has been widely viewed across platforms, including X, formerly Twitter.
The operator’s exaggerated false eyelashes, fluttering during the ordeal, became a talking point online. Many saw them as a symbol of the human side of system failures in public transportation.
SFMTA Vows New Safety Fixes After Train Incident
The agency is working with the train’s manufacturer to add speed-limiting software to curvy track sections. This fix aims to prevent future overspeeding, especially in tunnels like the Sunset Tunnel.
The incident has also reignited concern over scheduling and fatigue among transit workers. SFMTA has faced ongoing criticism for maintenance problems and operator management issues.
Online Debate: Fatigue vs. Hiring Practices
Following the video’s release, social media platforms saw heated debates about the cause of the scare. Some users suggested that hiring practices like DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion) might be linked. However, no evidence supports those claims.
Instead, transit advocates point to overworked staff and outdated scheduling systems. The close call highlights how one tired operator can put hundreds at risk in a split second.

What Makes This SFMTA Scare So Alarming
This wasn’t just a technical failure—it was a real human lapse. The operator fell asleep on duty while carrying a full load of passengers through a narrow, dangerous stretch of track.
With no derailment and no injuries, officials say it was a lucky escape. But the incident leaves a critical question: How many other operators may be pushed to the limit while behind the controls?
Why This Story Matters to Bay Area Riders
Bay Area commuters rely on SFMTA trains every day. This terrifying event has made many question how safe those rides really are. The focus keyword, SFMTA train operator, now symbolizes larger issues in transit safety and staffing.
The incident serves as a stark reminder that transit systems must balance efficiency with worker well-being. Without that, another close call may not end as safely.
