Who Is Santino Casio? Inside the Life of Lanez’s Attacker
*The name Santino Casio may be new to the public, but inside California Correctional Institution in Tehachapi, he’s been known for years. Now, he’s making headlines after allegedly stabbing rapper Tory Lanez 14 times on May 12, 2025. The 41-year-old inmate is serving a life sentence for second-degree murder and has a violent history behind bars—including convictions for assault in 2008 and weapon possession in 2018.
Casio spoke from prison in a May 24 phone interview with TMZ, claiming he acted in self-defense. He said he believed Lanez had put a bounty on his head, a rumor he picked up through the prison’s infamous “grapevine”—a chaotic network of inmate whispers and warnings that often blur fact and fiction. He claimed Lanez had a suspicious lump in his pocket that looked like a weapon and that, fearing for his life, he struck first.
“I wasn’t trying to kill him,” Casio told TMZ. “It really didn’t have to go that far. But he made his decisions, and I made mine.” It’s a far cry from a remorseful apology, but it paints a picture of how paranoia and survival rule prison life.
Self-Defense or Strategic Spin? Casio’s Version Under Scrutiny
While Casio claims he attacked Lanez out of fear, Lanez’s legal team isn’t buying it. They’ve labeled his story an “absurd fabrication” and pointed out that no weapon was recovered from Lanez. They also note Casio’s history of violence and label the stabbing as brutal and deliberate, not defensive.

Lanez, real name Daystar Peterson, suffered two collapsed lungs in the attack and had to be rushed to a hospital in Bakersfield. He has since been moved to the California Men’s Colony near San Luis Obispo for safety. His attorneys say he’s still recovering but in stable condition.
Casio, meanwhile, remains in restricted housing pending the results of an investigation by the Kern County District Attorney’s Office. No formal charges have been filed yet, but with the high-profile nature of the case, prison officials are under pressure to determine what really went down—and whether Casio’s claims of self-defense hold any weight.
Prison “Grapevine” or Paranoia? The Bounty That May Not Exist
According to Casio, the alleged threat from Lanez came through the prison grapevine—a kind of inmate rumor mill used to pass along info, gossip, and warnings. In maximum-security prisons like Tehachapi, where recent riots and homicides have occurred, that kind of talk can quickly spiral into violence.
But the reliability of these “grapevine” tips is highly questionable. Information often changes as it moves from inmate to inmate, with exaggerations and personal biases mixing in.
Casio’s claim about a bounty on his head hasn’t been corroborated by any official source, and the absence of a weapon on Lanez makes the self-defense narrative shaky at best.
Still, Casio insists that the stabbing wasn’t premeditated but reactive. He also says he and Lanez had a “decent relationship” as neighbors in adjacent cells before things took a dark turn. If true, it adds another layer of tension to the incident—was it all just a tragic misunderstanding fueled by prison politics?

A Violent History and a Life Behind Bars
Casio has been incarcerated since 2004 for second-degree murder. His rap sheet has grown inside prison, with documented incidents of violent behavior. Some prison insiders describe him as someone deeply immersed in survival mode, which could explain his reaction—but doesn’t excuse the level of violence.
Prison life at Tehachapi is far from calm. The facility has dealt with its share of chaos, including a 100-inmate riot earlier this month. In that environment, even the hint of danger can provoke swift—and sometimes deadly—retaliation. Casio’s past and his reaction to what he believed was a threat from Lanez may be rooted in that survivalist mindset.
Whether his claims hold up under further investigation remains to be seen. But his actions have already thrust him into national headlines, raising new questions about inmate safety, celebrity vulnerability behind bars, and the volatile mix of rumor and reality in prison life.
