Ryan Clark Regrets Dragging RG3’s Wife Into Heated Sports Feud
*Ryan Clark is walking back his controversial remarks about Robert Griffin III and his wife, Grete Griffin. On Friday’s episode of “The Pivot” podcast, the ESPN analyst and former NFL safety issued a direct apology to his former teammate after a public feud spiraled out of control over WNBA star Angel Reese and Caitlin Clark.
“She should not have been brought up in me trying to make a point,” Clark said about Grete, who is white. “I could speak positively about what [Black women] are without making the insinuations that it’s something that non-Black women don’t do well.”
Clark’s comments came after a viral video Griffin posted following a tense WNBA game between Reese’s Chicago Sky and Clark’s Indiana Fever. In the video, Griffin accused Reese of “hating” Clark and mocked her reaction to a flagrant foul. Clark responded critically, pointing out Griffin’s history of relationships with white women and implying he lacked the experience to speak on how Black women are treated.
Clark Explains the “Optics” That Bothered Him
Clark elaborated further on what triggered his reaction. “In the video that RG3 posted that I felt mocked Angel Reese, [Grete] was in the background,” he said. “I did not love the optics of RG3, a Black man, attacking and imitating — and what I felt was insulting a Black woman — with his wife in the background almost as a prop.”

Clark said his intent was to highlight the importance of having Black women close to you and learning from their experiences, but he admitted he failed in the way he conveyed that. “It didn’t land the way I intended, and I was wrong for bringing his wife into the discussion,” he added.
RG3 Calls Clark’s Comments “Cowardly”
Robert Griffin III, also known as RG3, did not take the personal dig lightly. Responding to Clark on social media, the former quarterback slammed the analyst for attacking his family over a sports opinion. “Ryan Clark personally attacking me and my family personally over a sports opinion is cowardly, spineless, and weak,” Griffin wrote. “It’s a bad look for ESPN and for him as a man.”
Griffin and his wife Grete, who share three daughters, were both caught in the crossfire of a debate that was supposed to center on WNBA athletes. For Griffin, the conflict crossed a line when family was pulled into the mix, turning a professional disagreement into a personal battle.
Clark Issues Public Apology and Calls for Respect
Wrapping up his apology, Clark looked into the camera and directly addressed Grete Griffin. “I was out of line, I was out of bounds, I apologize,” he said sincerely. He also called on his supporters to avoid targeting Griffin’s family. “To all the people who don’t like RG3’s take or the way that he moves, or even if you just take my side in this conversation — leave his family alone.”
The feud between the two former NFL players started with a passionate disagreement over how WNBA players are treated and spiraled into a deeply personal exchange. While it began with contrasting takes on Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese, the inclusion of Griffin’s wife made things especially divisive.
Where Things Stand Now
As of now, Griffin has not responded to Clark’s apology, and it’s unclear if the two men have spoken privately. What is clear is that Clark’s on-air regret was meant to bring the focus back to respectful debate — and off of players’ personal lives and families.
Whether this closes the chapter on their feud remains to be seen, but for now, Clark is taking accountability and urging fans and critics alike to steer clear of personal attacks in the name of sports debate.
