
*The music world is mourning the loss of Jerry “The Iceman” Butler, a legendary singer, songwriter, and Rock & Roll Hall of Famer who passed away on Thursday (02-20-25) at age 85.
Butler, who had been battling Parkinson’s Disease in his final years, leaves behind an extraordinary legacy that spans both music and public service.
Born in Mississippi and raised in Chicago, Butler’s musical journey began as a teenager with the gospel group, the Northern Jubilee Singers. His big break came when he co-founded The Impressions, alongside Curtis Mayfield, capturing audiences with the poignant ballad “For Your Precious Love.”
Though successful with The Impressions, Butler embarked on a solo career that saw him rise to R&B stardom, accumulating over four dozen chart hits such as “He Will Break Your Heart,” “Make It Easy On Yourself,” “Ain’t Understanding Mellow,” and “Only The Strong Survive.”

Beyond singing, Butler made significant contributions as a songwriter, including the classic Otis Redding song, “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long.” His impact on music was recognized with his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1991.
In the 1980s, Butler expanded his influence into public service, serving as a Cook County Commissioner in Illinois for three decades. During his tenure, he continued to embrace his musical roots, performing occasionally and hosting PBS music specials that celebrated legacy music. He retired from public service in 2018, a year before the passing of his beloved wife, Annette.
