*Patrick Mahomes, the celebrated quarterback of the Kansas City Chiefs, recently sparked controversy on social media after discussing his decision to cut his “nappy” hair.
Known for his signature mohawk, Mahomes explained during an interview with KCTV that his decision not to cut his hair was driven by superstition. In the interview, the 29-year-old three-time Super Bowl champion revealed, “I’ve wanted to do it for a while, but it was kind of one of those superstitions, I kept winning the Super Bowl, which is a good thing, but I didn’t want to cut the hair while I was doing it.”
Mahomes had become accustomed to his look but emphasized that cutting his hair was always part of his plan, regardless of the Chiefs’ victory or loss at the 2025 Super Bowl. “I told everybody during the season that win or lose, if we win three in a row or if we lose, I’m getting a haircut like that’s enough.”
Despite his excitement about the new look, Mahomes’ comments about his hair, specifically referring to it as “nappy,” ignited backlash, especially within the Black community.
“I’ve looked at some videos from last year, and I can’t believe all you guys let me keep that nappy hair for so long,” said Mahomes, before adding that he felt he looked better with the new short haircut. The term “nappy” is often a sensitive subject in Black culture, as it has historically been used in derogatory contexts to describe textured hair.

As SandraRose.com reports, some members of the Black community were quick to voice their discomfort over Mahomes’ comments, with one Twitter user remarking, “White mother and a white wife, nothing left to see here.”
Mahomes’ mixed heritage (his father is Black) has always made him a somewhat divisive figure in discussions of race and identity, particularly as he navigates the complexities of his public persona and family life with his white wife, Brittany, and their three children.
