Ben Crump Speaks Out as Tyre Nichols’ Trial Begins
*As the state trial starts for the former Memphis officers charged in Tyre Nichols‘ death, civil rights attorneys Ben Crump and Antonio Romanucci are speaking out.
“This trial marks a critical step in the pursuit of justice for Tyre.”
“As the state trial begins for the former Memphis police officers charged in the brutal killing of Tyre Nichols, we are reminded of the profound pain and loss his family continues to endure. This trial marks a critical step in the pursuit of justice for Tyre, whose life was senselessly taken in an act of unconscionable violence. We stand in solidarity with Tyre’s family and the Memphis community as this legal process unfolds, and we will continue to advocate for transparency, accountability, and meaningful reform to prevent such tragedies in the future,” Crump’s legal team in a statement to NewsOne.
Background of Tyre Nichols’ Tragic Death
Tyre Nichols died on January 10, 2023, three days after being brutally beaten by police officers during a traffic stop for alleged reckless driving.
Bodycam footage shows officers aggressively pulling Nichols from his car without a clear explanation, pepper-spraying and assaulting him before he ran for his life.
Officers caught up with Nichols and continued to beat and kick him. An independent autopsy revealed he suffered extensive bleeding from a severe beating.
“The Memphis Police Department murdered my son.”
“The Memphis Police Department murdered my son,” Nichols’ mother said after watching the video footage.
Family’s Fight for Justice Continues
In 2024, Tyre’s mother, RowVaughn Wells, filed a $550 million federal lawsuit against the city of Memphis and its police department.
She accused the MPD’s Scorpion Unit of using “seething aggression and unjustified force” against her son during the fatal encounter.
The civil trial, initially set for January 2025, has been rescheduled for July 13, 2026.

Federal Trial and Convictions
Earlier this year, three officers — Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, and Justin Smith — were convicted of witness tampering for covering up Nichols’ beating.
While some were acquitted of civil rights violations, Haley was found guilty of causing bodily injury under civil rights laws, a lesser charge with lighter penalties.
Meanwhile, others were found guilty of conspiracy related to tampering with witnesses.
Community Reactions and Historical Comparisons
“They became no better than the days of Emmett Till.”
“Knowing the history of police interactions with the Black community throughout time, these men took a position of power and instead of doing something to better the future and honor the past, they became no better than the days of Emmett Till. They have let us all down. Justice will be served to them,” said Tyre’s older brother Jamal Dupree in a joint statement with friend Angelina Paxton.
“The officers treated Nichols like a human piñata.”
Ben Crump said the officers treated Nichols like “a human piñata” and compared the police violence to the infamous Rodney King beating in 1991. Many community members and activists are calling for stronger charges and wider police reforms.

Additional Fallout from the Case
Five officers were indicted on charges including second-degree murder, official misconduct, and aggravated kidnapping.
Three fire department employees were fired for failing to render aid, though they were not criminally charged.
Other officers involved faced internal disciplinary action, but few have been fired.
Ongoing Investigations and Legal Actions
The Department of Justice launched an external review of the Memphis Police Department following public outcry. The local district attorney’s office also reviewed about 100 cases involving the former officers. Around 30 cases were dismissed, and charges were reduced in others.
The Nichols case continues to shine a harsh light on police brutality and the urgent need for real change in policing across the country.
