*Comedian and longtime “Real Time” host Bill Maher sparked a heated debate Friday night after mocking the newly opened Obama Presidential Center in Chicago and accusing members of his own audience of being “f—king liars” when they claimed they planned to visit the landmark.
The Obama Presidential Center, dedicated to preserving the legacy of the nation’s first Black president, officially opened Friday in Chicago’s Jackson Park. The exchange unfolded during a panel discussion featuring Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., and journalist Jonathan Martin, with Maher taking aim at the design, cost, and purpose of the sprawling complex.
The campus includes a museum, community hub, Chicago Public Library branch, athletic facilities, and outdoor gathering spaces. At the center of the project stands a 225-foot museum tower that has drawn both praise and criticism for its unconventional design.
Maher Questions Cost and Purpose
During the discussion, Maher mocked the appearance of the museum building and questioned whether presidential libraries remain relevant in the modern era.
“Do we have a picture of the Obama library? Because it looks like something aliens built in Dubai,” Maher said during the broadcast.
The comedian then focused on the project’s reported $850 million price tag.
“It cost $850 million. I don’t understand why progressives like this. Couldn’t that money be better spent on something else?” Maher asked.
He went on to question the broader concept of presidential libraries and monuments dedicated to former presidents.
“Who’s gonna go to this? Why does anybody need a presidential library? These monuments to some of these ego, out of office,” Maher said before turning his attention to the studio audience.
Audience Reaction Sparks Sharp Response
Maher then asked audience members whether they planned to visit the Obama Presidential Center.
The question was met with loud applause, suggesting significant support for the project among those in attendance.
Maher, however, appeared unconvinced.
“Really? You’re all a bunch of f—king liars,” he responded. “You’re not going to the Obama library.”
The blunt remark drew laughs and reinforced Maher’s skepticism about public enthusiasm for the project.
Ro Khanna Defends Obama’s Legacy
Khanna challenged Maher’s criticism and argued that the center represents far more than a physical building.
The California congressman questioned why Maher objected to a project honoring the nation’s first Black president while billion-dollar ventures in other sectors often avoid similar scrutiny.
“First of all, we don’t need that building to do that,” Maher replied. “That’s in our hearts and minds. That already happened.”
Khanna pointed to remarks delivered by former First Lady Michelle Obama during the center’s dedication ceremony and highlighted the broader meaning behind the project.
Khanna noted that Michelle Obama spoke about her husband’s perseverance through racism and criticism.
The congressman argued that Obama’s rise to the White House changed how millions of Americans viewed what was possible.

A Debate Over Inspiration Versus Infrastructure
Khanna said Obama’s story carries significance that extends well beyond the eight years he spent in office.
Reflecting on his own experiences, the congressman recalled being told early in his career that his background would prevent him from winning elected office.
“When I was in law school, an intern, they said to me ‘Ro, you’re Indian-American, you’re of Hindu faith, go to the Capitol because you’re never getting elected to anything,’” Khanna said.
He credited Obama’s election with changing perceptions for many Americans from underrepresented communities.
“That’s what I heard, and then Barack Obama happened and he changed the direction of this nation for millions of people,” Khanna said.
Maher remained unmoved by the argument.
“What does that have to do with a building?” he asked. “We didn’t know that story without the building? Like unless you go to the building you’re like ‘Obama, who was he again?’”
Symbol Of Legacy Or Expensive Monument?
Supporters see the Obama Presidential Center as a lasting tribute to the former president’s legacy and influence. Critics, including Maher, argue that Obama’s impact speaks for itself and does not require a costly monument.
The exchange underscored how Obama’s legacy continues to inspire admiration among supporters while also fueling debate over how that legacy should be preserved and celebrated for future generations.
