NBCUniversal Syndication Exit Signals Major Daytime TV Shift
*NBCUniversal syndication is undergoing a dramatic change that will reshape daytime television. The company announced March 13 that it will stop producing all first-run syndicated programming. The move ends production on several long-running shows that have defined daytime viewing for decades.
Executives say shifting audience habits forced the NBCUniversal syndication decision. Viewers increasingly choose streaming services, social platforms, and YouTube instead of traditional daytime television. As a result, the classic syndication model has struggled to stay profitable.
‘Access Hollywood’ Ending After Nearly Three Decades
The biggest casualty of the NBCUniversal syndication shift is “Access Hollywood.” The celebrity news show launched in 1996 and quickly became a staple of entertainment television. It has delivered red carpet coverage, interviews, and Hollywood headlines for almost 30 years.
Current hosts include Mario Lopez and Kit Hoover, who helped maintain the program’s pop culture presence. Production will continue through September 2026 before officially ending. Stations will air new episodes until then as the show prepares its final run.

‘Access Hollywood Live’ Also Ending with Parent Show
“Access Hollywood Live,” sometimes shortened to “Access Live,” will also end production in September. The daytime talk and lifestyle spin-off expanded the brand beyond celebrity news. It mixed entertainment coverage with cooking segments, interviews, and pop culture debates.
The show often featured celebrity guests and trending topics from television, film, and social media. Over the years, it became a regular companion program to the flagship entertainment news show. Its closure marks the end of the entire “Access” daytime franchise.
‘Karamo’ Talk Show Concludes After Short Run
“Karamo,” hosted by “Queer Eye” star Karamo Brown, will also end under the NBCUniversal syndication shutdown. The advice-driven talk show premiered in 2024 and focused on relationships, personal growth, and conflict resolution. It was filmed at the NBCUniversal studio facility in Stamford, Connecticut.
Production on the current season has already wrapped. Original episodes will continue airing through summer 2026 before the series concludes. Despite its uplifting message, the show struggled to gain long-term traction in a changing daytime TV market.
‘The Steve Wilkos Show’ Ends After Nearly Two Decades
“The Steve Wilkos Show” is another major casualty of the NBCUniversal syndication exit. The courtroom-style daytime program premiered in 2007 as a spin-off from “The Jerry Springer Show.” Host Steve Wilkos became known for confronting guests during intense family disputes and investigations.
The program frequently used lie detector tests and dramatic on-stage confrontations. Its confrontational style helped it survive nearly two decades in syndication. New episodes will air through summer 2026 before the show officially concludes.
Why NBCUniversal Syndication Is Shutting Down Shows
Industry changes played a major role in the NBCUniversal syndication shutdown. Local television stations now favor local news programming and other formats that deliver stronger ratings. Many markets are reducing space for traditional talk and entertainment magazines.
Streaming services and social media platforms have also fragmented audiences. Viewers often consume celebrity news or personal advice content online instead of on television. This shift makes it harder for syndicated shows to attract consistent national audiences.
NBCUniversal Leaders Explain the Decision
NBCUniversal executives say the company must adapt to the changing media landscape. Leadership emphasized that the decision was based on evolving station needs and viewer behavior. Despite the shutdown, NBCUniversal will still distribute its library of existing programs.
“NBCUniversal is making changes to our first-run syndication division to better align with the programming preferences of local stations. The company will remain active in the distribution of our existing program library and other off-network titles, while winding down production of our first-run shows. These shows have provided audiences with great talk and entertainment content for many years and we’re very proud of the teams behind them.”
The statement came from Frances Berwick, chairman of Bravo and Peacock Unscripted. She emphasized the company’s continued focus on content distribution even after ending new productions. NBCUniversal’s existing show library will still be available to stations.
What The NBCUniversal Syndication Exit Means for Daytime TV
The NBCUniversal syndication exit highlights a larger shift across daytime television. Other programs have faced similar struggles as audiences migrate toward digital platforms. Some networks are exploring streaming-first talk formats and social-driven content.
For viewers, the changes mark the end of several familiar daytime staples. Fans still have months to watch final episodes before production ends in 2026. The move raises a bigger question about whether the traditional syndicated talk format can survive in the streaming era.
