*HBO Documentary Films is set to unveil “Murder in Glitterball City,” a two-part documentary that unpacks a disturbing true-crime story rooted in Louisville, Kentucky. The city, celebrated for its Victorian-era homes and its association with the mirrored glitterball, also serves as the setting for a case marked by deception, conflicting stories, and a brutal killing.
The documentary is directed and produced by Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato, with production by Mona Card and executive producers Nancy Abraham, Lisa Heller, and Sara Rodriguez. Edited by Johanna Gavard and Francy Kachler, the project combines investigative storytelling with a stylized visual approach shaped by cinematographer Huy Truong. Music is provided by Danny Bensi and Saunder Jurriaans, with contributions from James Newberry.
According to the news release, “Murder in Glitterball City” draws inspiration from the non-fiction book “A Dark Room in Glitter Ball City” by David Dominé. The project revisits a 2010 murder investigation that began with a 911 call and ended with police uncovering a body buried in the basement of a historic mansion. From that moment, the case spiraled into a complex legal and emotional battle between two former lovers.

As the documentary unfolds, viewers are guided through the story by a group of local residents who bring both color and perspective to the narrative. Their accounts frame a broader examination of a toxic relationship, a vulnerable victim, and the unreliable testimonies of individuals facing the most serious consequences imaginable.
At the center of the case are Joey Banis and Jeffrey Mundt, each accused of playing a role in the crime. During police interrogations and subsequent trials, both men offer sharply contrasting versions of events, filled with contradictions and allegations aimed at shifting blame. The film carefully tracks how these competing narratives collide as the justice system attempts to determine the truth.
Through emerging video evidence and courtroom developments, “Murder in Glitterball City” challenges assumptions about guilt and innocence. The documentary ultimately presents a layered portrait of a case where facts are elusive, memories are suspect, and the pursuit of justice is anything but straightforward.
“Murder in Glitterball City” debuts on HBO and Streams on MAX on February 19. Watch the trailer above.
