*Marvel Comics has ignited a firestorm among fans with the release of “Marvel Knights: The World to Come” on June 4, introducing a controversial new Black Panther: Ketema, a white character with blond hair and blue eyes, presented as T’Challa’s son.
Created by Joe Quesada, Christopher Priest, Richard Isanove, Richard Starkings, and Comiccraft’s Tyler Smith, the comic depicts a tribal duel in Wakanda where Ketema challenges and defeats T’Challa, declaring, “I am king now. Wakanda is mine.” The shocking reveal has sparked intense debate, with fans questioning the decision to reimagine the traditionally Black hero of African descent.
The story, set after T’Challa’s death, weaves through flashbacks, including his marriages to Storm and Monica Lynne, and a conversation with his mother, Ramonda, about securing an heir. During the duel, Ketema expresses deep resentment, accusing T’Challa of using him as a pawn in a war against the Clerics.
Ketema claims to be “reborn in moral formation” and “endowed with truth…the righteousness of kings! True Kings.” He describes T’Challa as an unworthy father and a liar. Cleric “M” fuels the conflict, declaring T’Challa “no king” as long as Ketema lives, intensifying their battle.
Fans have taken to platforms like X to voice their frustration. One critic wrote, “Whenever a Black-led show or film gains mainstream success-there seems to be a push to ‘diversify’ or reinterpret the narrative in ways that dilute its original Black-centered message.” Another stated, “Fans want legacy and respect not shock value that feels like a slap to Wakanda’s identity.” A third added, “Yeah they complained when Marvel made Captain America a black man too. People want consistency. Shocking.”
WAIT… Marvel Comics is giving T’Challa a white son? … Are they really gonna do Ryan Gosling as Black Panther?!?!?! ? pic.twitter.com/j4HVCTe6JQ

Speculation abounds about Ketema’s origins, as both T’Challa and Monica Lynne are Black, making a white biological son unlikely. As MEAWW reports, some fans point to Nicole Adams, a character appearing on the cover of Issue #3, as a potential mother.
The resurfacing of a meme depicting Ryan Gosling as Black Panther has further fueled casting discussions about potential future Black Panther projects. Meanwhile, readers await clarity on Ketema’s true lineage and Marvel’s bold narrative choice.
