Greene opens up about leaving Congress on ‘60 Minutes’
*Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene made headlines in a new “60 Minutes” interview, sharing why she’s resigning from Congress and exposing tensions with former President Donald Trump. Her resignation becomes official on January 5, 2026, after serving nearly six years in office. The interview aired yesterday (12-07-25) and marked her first major appearance since the announcement.
Greene’s conversation with CBS journalist Lesley Stahl pulled back the curtain on Republican infighting and her growing rift with Trump. She claimed fear of retaliation keeps GOP lawmakers publicly loyal to him, even as many mock him in private.
Republicans fear Trump’s online attacks, Greene says
Greene described watching Republican colleagues ridicule Trump behind closed doors. “They make fun of how he talks,” she said, adding that many also mocked her for defending him. Once Trump secured the 2024 nomination, she said, their attitudes shifted quickly.
“They all started… kissing his ass and decided to put on a MAGA hat for the first time,” she told Stahl, apologizing afterward for her blunt phrasing. Greene suggested loyalty to Trump is often driven by fear of being attacked on Truth Social.

The Epstein files sparked a major fallout with Trump
The turning point in their relationship, Greene said, was her support for releasing Jeffrey Epstein-related files. She was one of only four House Republicans who signed a petition to force a vote on the bill, which required the release of DOJ records tied to Epstein.
Trump initially opposed the bill, warning Greene it would “hurt people.” She described him as “furious” during a private phone call. Eventually, under political pressure, Trump reversed his stance and signed the bill into law. The files must now be released within 30 days.
Greene faced serious threats after Trump backlash
After Trump labeled her a “traitor” and a “lunatic,” Greene said she began receiving death threats. One email targeting her son used the subject line “Marjorie Traitor Greene.” A pipe bomb was also sent to her home, along with several hoax deliveries.
She claimed the threats began coming more from MAGA supporters than Democrats after she supported Epstein survivors. When she shared some of the threats with Trump, she said he responded with “harsh accusatory replies and zero sympathy.”

Greene accuses Trump of leaving ‘America First’ behind
Despite once voting with Trump nearly all the time, Greene now says he has lost touch with his base. She criticized his foreign policy, including support for Israel, and said he’s prioritizing elites over regular Americans. “He doesn’t represent the people anymore,” she said.
Greene also expressed regret for contributing to toxic politics, but said she has no interest in running for higher office. “I would hate the Senate,” she said. “I’m not running for governor. I’m done.”
Trump says Greene quitting is ‘great news’
Trump responded to Greene’s resignation by calling it “great news for the country” on Truth Social. He blamed her departure on falling poll numbers and said she was no longer helpful to the movement. Greene did not reply directly but stood by her decision.
The Epstein files bill passed with near-unanimous support, despite Trump’s early opposition. Greene said that proves there’s a divide between public statements and private beliefs among lawmakers. Her interview suggests more internal GOP rifts may surface soon.
“It has all come down to the Epstein files.”
“They’re terrified to step out of line and get a nasty Truth Social post on them, yes.”
“I have zero plans, zero desire to run for president. I would hate the Senate.”
“These were American girls… They were 14, trafficked, raped, and no one wanted to talk about it.”
