Malik describes his father winning “Mac of the Year” and driving a flashy yellow Cadillac, drawing parallels to infamous drug figures like Frank Lucas.
Behind closed doors, Malik witnessed violence. He recalls his father putting out cigarettes on his mother’s face. His early years were shaped by chaotic environments and complicated family ties that included connections to the Black Panthers and witness protection programs.

Displacement and identity struggles in elite schools
Malik’s childhood included private schools like St. Hillary’s in Tiburon, where he often felt like the only Black student. His mother kept him away from Black neighborhoods, which left him feeling isolated and unsure of where he belonged. Despite growing up among stars like Flip Wilson and Miles Davis, he says he always felt like an outsider.
Even when he moved to Los Angeles, he continued to wrestle with identity confusion. He was part of a famous family but disconnected from his own cultural roots. These deep internal conflicts set the stage for his early descent into substance abuse.
Early exposure to drugs leads to decades-long addiction
Malik began using drugs at just four years old and started experimenting with cocaine around age 11 or 12. By 14, he was freebasing. He first entered rehab at 17, beginning a long and painful battle with addiction that would span years.
Despite multiple attempts to get clean, his turning point came after suffering a stroke and a heart attack. Even during hospitalization, he continued using. But it was through Alcoholics Anonymous and spiritual grounding that he finally started to reclaim his life. Now, he says, he’s been sober for nearly nine years.
Staying sober while living in Las Vegas
Today, Malik lives and works in Las Vegas, a city full of temptation. He admits that the environment can be difficult for someone in recovery. But by avoiding triggers and focusing on creativity and work, he maintains his sobriety.
Music remains central to his life. He’s currently working on a musical project and continues to draw strength from the 12-step community. Staying close to that support network has helped him survive in an industry and city that can easily lead to relapse.
Marriage, loss, and finding peace through therapy
Malik shares a shocking story from his past: he was once married to a woman involved in an ecstasy ring with mobster Sammy the Bull. She later died in prison under suspicious circumstances. This tragedy added another layer of grief and instability to an already complex life.
Now in his later years, Malik says therapy is a priority. He regrets not starting it sooner. Working through old trauma, choosing gratitude, and staying mindful are part of his new daily practices. “This chapter is about healing,” he says.
