*John Boyega will star in and executive produce a prequel series to Denzel Washington’s post-apocalyptic action film “The Book of Eli.”
Deadline reports that Boyega will portray a younger version of Washington’s Eli in the project, with the Hughes brothers directing and executive producing.
The plot details are unknown, but “I hear it is set 30 years prior to the events in the film, which would put it around the time of the nuclear event or its immediate aftermath,” Deadline’s Nellie Andreeva writes.
Screenrant reports that Hollywood wants to expand Washington’s franchises, and a prequel show for “The Equalizer” could be next.
“The Book of Eli” TV series “marks one of the highest-profile IP-based packages to hit the premium TV marketplace since the end of the Hollywood strikes,” Deadline writes.
The prequel series is being shopped around for a streaming service or network.
The 2010 movie was a box office success, earning $157.1 globally on an $80 million budget, per Deadline.
Meanwhile, we reported earlier that Washington may reprise his character in a sequel to the 1999 crime thriller “The Bone Collector,” co-starring Angelina Jolie.
Based on the 1997 novel of the same name by Jeffrey Deaver, the film stars Washington as a quadriplegic and veteran New York detective tasked with consulting on a string of murders.
“The Bone Collector” grossed over $150 million against a $48 million production budget, according to Giant Freakin’ Robot.
In related news, Washington and Antoine Fuqua are reuniting again to develop the “Hannibal” drama for Netflix. The pair collaborated on “Training Day” and “The Equalizer” franchises.
The “Hannibal” film is part of Fuqua’s first-look partnership with Netflix.
Netflix said, “Antoine is an impactful storyteller who believes art can create meaningful change in the world. We had a great collaboration with him on The Guilty and look forward to telling many more stories together in the future.”
