*NBA champion Jayson Tatum faced a life-altering setback after rupturing his Achilles tendon during the 2025 Eastern Conference Semifinals, requiring surgery in May.
“This is something that has really affected my life,” Tatum told Us Weekly, explaining how the injury forced him to move back to his mother’s house in Boston. Unable to navigate stairs, he relied on a first-floor setup, a walker, and a shower seat, noting, “I had to make sure I didn’t slip in the shower. I had to be real careful.”
The injury transformed daily routines, with tasks like showering and dressing taking Tatum nearly “50 minutes.” Despite the challenges, Tatum found comfort in returning to his mother’s home, reminiscing, “It was like high school.”

He expressed gratitude, saying, “Who better to help you through this than the person that raised you? I couldn’t be more thankful to be in a position where my mom lived really close and I was able to stay with her.”
Tatum’s mother, Brandy Cole, played a pivotal role in his recovery, though she found him stubborn at times. “You know, she’d probably say I was hard-headed,” Tatum admitted, adding, “I was still trying to do a lot of things on my own. I didn’t want much help, but she was always there.”
