*As we reported earlier, on February 5, 2025, the music industry lost one of its icons, Irv Gotti, whose impact reached far beyond the realms of hip-hop and R&B.
Irv, whose real name was Irving Domingo Lorenzo Jr., passed away at the age of 54 due to complications from a massive hemorrhagic stroke while engaged in what he loved most—playing poker and enjoying Chinese food, according to his brother, Chris Gotti.
His death not only shocked fans and friends but also highlighted the darker battles he faced in his personal life, particularly his ongoing struggle with diabetes.
In an emotional discussion on the “2Way” podcast on February 20, 2025, Chris Gotti, co-founder of the influential Murder Inc. Records, opened up about Irv’s health issues. Diagnosed with diabetes in his late 40s, Irv had difficulty accepting the reality of his condition. This resistance to change ultimately led to a severe decline in his health over the past three years of his life.
Chris was transparent about the anguish he felt as he watched his brother grapple with these personal issues, noting the pain was compounded by the fact that their father also battled the same disease.
“I watched him suffer the last 3 years of his life.”

Born on June 26, 1970, in Hollis, Queens, New York, Irv came from a humble, working-class background, growing up as one of eight siblings. With their mother, Nee Nee, managing the household finances and their father working as a taxi driver and dispatcher, the Gotti family embodied resilience and drive. It was these formative experiences that spurred Irv to carve a niche for himself in the music industry. He adopted the “Gotti” surname as a nod to the notorious mob boss John Gotti, casting a bold and street-hardened persona that resonated with his music’s gritty yet melodic sound.
In 1998, alongside Chris, Irv co-founded Murder Inc. Records under the prestigious Def Jam Recordings. The label quickly became synonymous with the evolution of early 2000s hip-hop and R&B, thanks to Irv’s natural ear for hits and his ability to blend rap with catchy, melodic hooks. With chart-toppers like Ja Rule’s “Between Me and You” and Ashanti’s “Foolish” gracing the airwaves, Irv proved to be a formidable force, guiding a generation of artists to fame and success.
However, this success came with its share of controversies, particularly when federal authorities raided Murder Inc. in 2003, linking the brothers to alleged drug money laundering operations tied to Queens kingpin Kenneth “Supreme” McGriff. Following a tense period, Irv surrendered to the FBI in January 2005, ultimately being acquitted in December of that same year. This acquittal not only solidified his reputation against the backdrop of adversity but also showcased the resilience that defined his character.
As the music world pays tribute to Irv Gotti, Chris’s reflections bring a personal lens to their shared legacy. Irv’s journey was characterized by triumphs and trials, a poignant reminder of the beautiful complexities that exist within life and the music that often mirrors them. His influence on the music industry remains undeniable, and his struggles serve as a reminder of the importance of acknowledging our health and well-being amidst our aspirations.

In remembering Irv Gotti, we honor not just the legacy of a music pioneer, but also the man whose life was marked by perseverance, creativity, and passion.
