His death not only shocked fans and friends but also highlighted the darker battles he faced in his personal life, particularly his ongoing struggle with diabetes.
In an emotional discussion on the “2Way” podcast on February 20, 2025, Chris Gotti, co-founder of the influential Murder Inc. Records, opened up about Irv’s health issues. Diagnosed with diabetes in his late 40s, Irv had difficulty accepting the reality of his condition. This resistance to change ultimately led to a severe decline in his health over the past three years of his life.
Chris was transparent about the anguish he felt as he watched his brother grapple with these personal issues, noting the pain was compounded by the fact that their father also battled the same disease.

With their mother, Nee Nee, managing the household finances and their father working as a taxi driver and dispatcher, the Gotti family embodied resilience and drive. It was these formative experiences that spurred Irv to carve a niche for himself in the music industry. He adopted the “Gotti” surname as a nod to the notorious mob boss John Gotti, casting a bold and street-hardened persona that resonated with his music’s gritty yet melodic sound.
In 1998, alongside Chris, Irv co-founded Murder Inc. Records under the prestigious Def Jam Recordings.
