*Idris Elba is back as Sam Nelson for the second season of Apple TV’s thriller series “Hijack,” with the first episode premiering globally on Wednesday, January 14. The eight-episode season will release weekly, concluding on March 4.
Season two places Nelson at the center of a high-stakes crisis when a Berlin underground train and its passengers are taken hostage, while authorities above ground race to prevent disaster. Elba, who also serves as an executive producer, returns alongside Christine Adams, Max Beesley, Archie Panjabi, and new additions including Christian Näthe, Clare-Hope Ashitey, Lisa Vicari, Toby Jones, Karima McAdams, and Christiane Paul.
Since its debut, “Hijack” has been a hit on Apple TV, earning critical acclaim and topping the Nielsen Streaming Originals Top 10 list. Critics have praised it as “instantly enthralling,” a “shot of pure adrenaline,” and “tension-filled and gripping, often putting the viewer on the edge of their seat,” with Elba recognized as a “commanding leading man.”
As Deadline reports, Elba reflected on the evolution of his character: “We really thought about what we answered in Season 1 and the questions that were unanswered… Psychologically, I was trying to put him in a very different place. Physically, there is a difference to the way he looks from Season 1 and that was intentional. When you find out what is going on through the season, you realize this is a broken man who is trying to find those answers.”
Jim Field Smith, co-creator and lead director, added, “Our whole guiding principle with Sam was that I wanted him to start Season 2 as a completely different character from the Sam Nelson you’ve left behind… In the very first frame when the camera resolves on him this season, you’re supposed to think, ‘What the hell’s happened to this guy?’”
Production involved meticulous recreation of a Berlin U-Bahn in East London. Field Smith said the underground environment enabled exploration of the city’s response to a hostage situation while giving Elba “essentially free reign of the entire environment.”
“I wanted it be a perfect replica,” said Field Smith. “It couldn’t be conveniently slightly easier to film in, and that’s partly because I knew I wanted to film with the real deal in Berlin. It had to match. It had to be literally a millimetre perfect recreation, so that was a big challenge.”
Season two promises a multilayered, tension-filled narrative that builds on the global intrigue of its first season while keeping audiences riveted on Sam Nelson’s complex journey.
