Minneapolis Mayor Condemns ICE After Fatal Shooting
A disturbing pattern of deadly force is emerging from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), connecting fatal shootings in two major American cities and sparking unified outrage from local leaders and civil rights coalitions.
The crisis gained national attention following the fatal shooting of a woman in Minneapolis. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey delivered a scathing rebuke, stating that after the shooting, “the first priority of local law enforcement was to get the victim to the hospital, and the second was to get ICE off the scene because they were ‘making a difficult situation more problematic.'”
“What they are doing is causing chaos and distrust,” Mayor Frey further stated. “They are ripping families apart, sowing chaos in the streets and, in this case, quite literally killing people. This was an agent recklessly using power that resulted in somebody dying.”
Los Angeles Coalition Demands Meeting and Answers
These disturbing events echo what communities in Los Angeles continue to experience, where ICE agents appear to be operating out of control and using unjustified, deadly force against civilians.
In response, civil rights activist Najee Ali, Director of Project Islamic Hope, along with a coalition of Los Angeles–based civil rights organizations—including the National Action Network and the Los Angeles Urban Policy Roundtable—have formally contacted Jaime Rios, Acting Director of ICE, to request an urgent meeting.
The coalition is demanding answers and accountability regarding the killing of Keith Porter Jr., who was fatally shot on New Year’s Eve by an off-duty ICE agent in Los Angeles.
“The killing of Keith Porter Jr. raises serious questions about accountability, use of force, and whether ICE agents—on or off duty—are being properly trained and monitored,” said Najee Ali.
Ali added: “Our community deserves transparency, an independent investigation, and a direct response from ICE leadership. A young man lost his life, and his family deserves answers—not silence.”

A Unified Demand for Systemic Accountability
The connection between the two shootings forms the core of the coalition’s demand. They argue that both incidents raise grave, systemic questions about ICE’s accountability and use-of-force protocols. The Minneapolis shooting has intensified scrutiny on the Los Angeles case, with activists pointing to a broader culture of impunity within the agency.
The unified message from Minneapolis to Los Angeles is clear: ICE’s actions are eroding public trust and resulting in tragic, preventable deaths. The coalition is demanding transparent, independent investigations and direct accountability from ICE leadership.
