*Sweating becomes more than an inconvenience when it regularly interferes with clothing, work, or ordinary activities.
According to USA Today, that level of perspiration may indicate hyperhidrosis, a condition affecting an estimated 5% of people. It can occur even when someone is resting in a comfortable environment.
“If someone is sweating enough to regularly soak through clothing, interfere with daily activities or occur even when they are not exercising or in a hot environment, it may be considered excessive,” said Cindy Vo, an aesthetic registered nurse at Serenity Aesthetics & Wellness.
Hyperhidrosis does not affect everyone in the same way. Some people experience widespread perspiration, while others notice it primarily in their armpits, hands, feet, face or scalp. Several factors may contribute to the condition.

“Some people naturally sweat more because their sweat glands are overactive,” Vo said. “Excessive sweating can be caused by medical conditions, hormonal fluctuations, stress and anxiety, certain medications or increased sensitivity to heat.”
Hormonal changes can play a significant role. About 75% of women going through menopause experience hot flashes, according to UCLA Health, and those episodes commonly include sweating.
Perspiration can also accompany numerous medical conditions. However, sweating by itself does not mean someone has a serious illness. A sudden or noticeable change deserves attention, particularly when it differs from a person’s normal pattern. The same applies when sweating causes embarrassment, forces frequent clothing changes, or limits social and professional activities.
Vo recommends discussing those symptoms with a healthcare provider. “A physician can help determine whether there is an underlying cause and discuss potential treatment options,” she said.
The evaluation can help distinguish naturally heavy perspiration from symptoms linked to medications, hormonal changes or another health issue.
