*Disney has unveiled the first trailer for “Disney Worldbuilders,” a new feature-length documentary that takes viewers inside the creative process behind some of the company’s most recognizable franchises and attractions.
Directed by Academy Award- and Emmy-nominated filmmaker Leslie Iwerks, the documentary premieres Aug. 20 on Disney+. The film examines how Disney’s storytellers transform beloved films and characters into immersive experiences at theme parks around the globe, while also revealing how those physical spaces can inspire the next generation of stories.
The newly released trailer offers a behind-the-scenes look at conversations with many of Disney’s top creative leaders, including Bob Iger, James Cameron, Jon Favreau, Kevin Feige, Jennifer Lee, Pete Docter, Dave Filoni, Jared Bush and Josh D’Amaro. Together, they discuss the creative collaboration behind franchises such as “Avatar,” “Star Wars,” the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Pixar, “Frozen” and “Zootopia,” and how those worlds extend far beyond the screen.
According to Disney, the documentary also provides an early look at upcoming lands and attractions being developed for Disney destinations worldwide, highlighting what the company describes as one of its most ambitious periods of expansion.

“I wanted to understand what ignites the imaginations of the storytellers behind some of the world’s most beloved stories,” Iwerks said. “As I sat down with each of them, I discovered a common thread: they often traced their creative journeys back to a single childhood moment—walking through the gates of Disneyland and realizing that impossible dreams could become real.”
She added, “It’s a feeling I know well, and one that has shaped my own journey. My hope is that audiences leave with that same sense of possibility and inspiration.”
Before arriving on Disney+, “Disney Worldbuilders” will make its world premiere at D23 on Aug. 16, where attendees will be among the first to watch the completed film.
Iwerks brings a deep personal connection to the project. Her grandfather, Ub Iwerks, co-created Mickey Mouse alongside Walt Disney, while her father, Don Iwerks, became a Disney Legend through his innovations at Walt Disney Studios. Leslie Iwerks is also known for acclaimed documentaries including “The Imagineering Story,” “The Pixar Story,” “Industrial Light & Magic: Creating the Impossible” and “Disneyland Handcrafted.”
