*Barack Obama reportedly used harsh language to describe Donald Trump and Donald Trump Jr. during a private conversation with Dr. Anthony Fauci in 2021.
The alleged exchange appears in Fauci’s newly released pandemic diary, The Independent reports. In the entry, Fauci recalled speaking with Obama about the political attacks he faced while helping lead the federal response to COVID-19.
Fauci said he told Obama that Trump Jr. was selling T-shirts and sweatshirts bearing the slogan “Fauci Kills Puppies” after critics accused Fauci’s National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases of supporting cruel experiments involving beagles.
“I told President Obama about the crazy things that the far-right Republicans were doing including the fact that Donald Trump, Jr. had on his website the sale of sweatshirts and T-shirts to collect money for his campaign and on the T-shirts and sweatshirts it said ‘Fauci kills puppies,’” Fauci wrote.

According to the diary, Obama responded with a profanity-laced assessment of Trump’s eldest son.
“Obama said that Donald Trump junior is ‘A f****** moron,’” Fauci wrote. “He apologized for using crude language but then went on to say that Donald Trump was a hopeless idiot who was a pathologic liar.”
The entry is part of more than 1,000 pages that Sen. Rand Paul released. The journals cover Fauci’s work and private observations from 2019 through 2022, including his dealings with elected officials and journalists. The records were reportedly found on government servers by Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and later provided to Senate Republicans.
The diary release has also renewed debate over the origins of COVID-19, a subject that has fueled years of clashes between Fauci and Paul. Paul has long argued that the virus most likely escaped from the Wuhan Institute of Virology, while many scientists continue to support evidence pointing to a natural animal-to-human transmission. According to CBS, the FBI has said a laboratory incident in Wuhan is the “most likely” explanation. The CIA issued a 2025 assessment also favoring the lab leak theory but with “low confidence.”
Several diary entries show Fauci wrestling with the uncertainty surrounding the virus’s origins during the early months of the pandemic. In a May 2021 entry, he wrote that criticism over his public comments had gotten “out of control,” explaining that he had consistently believed a natural origin was “very highly likely” but acknowledged that “no one is 100% certain of the origin including me.”
Paul argued the diaries contradict Fauci’s public statements, accusing him of telling the public one thing while writing something different in private.
The diary has renewed scrutiny of Fauci’s pandemic-era role and his handling of public criticism during one of the most divisive periods of his career. Last week, he invoked the Fifth Amendment 111 times during a three-hour Senate hearing on the origins of COVID-19.
