*Showering is one of those daily habits most people do on autopilot — but according to dermatologists, how often you lather up actually matters more than you might think.
The general consensus among skin experts is that bathing daily or at minimum two to three times per week is appropriate for most people. “Frequency of showering depends on many different factors that vary from person to person: oil production, sweating and activity level, exposure to bacteria, underlying skin conditions, etc.,” says New York City dermatologist Rachel Nazarian, MD, FAAD, per Real Simple. Seasonal changes and personal skin type can also play a role in how often someone needs to wash.
Knowing when your body is signaling a shower is needed is just as important as having a routine. Body odor, flaking skin, and yeast-related conditions like seborrheic dermatitis are all indicators that bacteria and oil levels have built up. For those who wait too long between washes, neglected skin can visibly change over time as grime and dead cells are left to accumulate on the surface.
Certain groups should make daily showering non-negotiable. People who exercise regularly, those managing acne, and anyone dealing with existing skin conditions fall into this category. Los Angeles dermatologist Lisa Chipps, MD, cautions that while a long hot shower may feel luxurious, excessive heat and prolonged exposure can leave skin weakened, parched, and prone to irritation. Lukewarm water and a gentle cleanser are always the better choice.
Hair care follows its own separate schedule. Daily shampooing is not a requirement for most people, and washing too frequently can deplete the scalp of the protective oils it needs to stay balanced. Hair texture and individual oil production should guide that decision.
Regardless of when or how often you shower, keeping it to five to ten minutes with a mild cleanser and a good moisturizer afterward will go a long way toward maintaining healthy skin.
