“The suspense-filled trailer for 20th Century Studios’ “The Hand That Rocks the Cradle” has dropped, offering a modern twist on the classic thriller. Directed by Michelle Garza Cervera, the film stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Maika Monroe, and it will premiere exclusively on Hulu on October 22.”
Winstead plays Caitlin Morales, an upscale suburban mom who hires a new nanny, Polly Murphy (Monroe), only to discover she is far from what she seems. The cast also includes Raúl Castillo, Martin Starr, Mileiah Vega, Riki Lindhome, and Shannon Cochran. The screenplay is written by Micah Bloomberg, based on an original script by Amanda Silver, and produced by Michael Schaefer, Mike LaRocca, and Ted Field, with executive producers Michael Napoliello, Maria Frisk, and Seth William Meier. As Empire reports, Cervera emphasizes that her version is not a remake. “I didn’t approach it as a remake,” she says, describing the project instead as “more [of a] reimagination.”
Cervera regards the 1992 film as a “legendary film,” but made the deliberate choice not to rewatch it when joining the project, believing “that’s the best way to honour a film as a filmmaker.” She adds that starting fresh allowed her to “build a whole story and characters and themes that stand on their own.”
The 1992 original, directed by Curtis Hanson, follows the dark story of a woman who poses as a nanny after a family tragedy, slowly infiltrating her target household. Starring Annabella Sciorra, Rebecca De Mornay, and Julianne Moore, the film was a box office hit, grossing around $140 million worldwide. Its suspenseful story and memorable performances made it a defining thriller of the early ’90s.
As the trailer for the new version drops, audiences get their first look at Cervera’s vision, promising a tense and contemporary take on the psychological thriller genre.
