*Former NBA star Glen “Big Baby” Davis is a free man after walking out of prison earlier than expected. The 40-year-old was released on March 12 after serving 17 months of a 40-month sentence tied to a fraud conviction involving the NBA Players’ Health and Benefit Welfare Plan.
Davis made his return public almost immediately, sharing a video on X from outside the facility. “They tried to hold me down,” he said, per Us Weekly. “You know what I’m saying? But I’m back, man. I’m back, baby.”
A Manhattan jury convicted Davis and fellow former NBA player William Bynum in November 2023 as part of a broader case involving more than 20 defendants. Prosecutors alleged the group used bogus chiropractic and dental receipts to fraudulently drain more than $5 million from the NBA’s health care plan. Throughout the legal proceedings, Davis held firm that he was not guilty.

Former U.S. Attorney Damian Williams addressed the conviction at the time, stating, “While many of the more than 20 defendants convicted in this case were well-known NBA stars, their conduct was otherwise a typical fraudulent scheme designed to defraud the NBA’s health care plan and net the defendants over $5 million in illicit profits. Today’s conviction exemplifies that despite notoriety or success in sports or any other field, no one is exempt from criminal charges if they engage in fraud.”
Davis was sentenced in May 2024 but did not begin serving his time until October 22, 2024, after a judge approved a postponement. His legal team made the case that he needed additional time to complete a documentary about his life, with the expectation that proceeds from the film would help satisfy the $80,000 restitution he owed.
Freedom still comes with conditions. Davis must spend four months at the Long Beach Residential Reentry Management Office, a halfway house supporting his transition back into the community. He is scheduled to depart the facility on July 9. Participation in financial management classes and drug treatment are also required under the terms of his sentence.
