*A Georgia Senate committee heard explosive testimony Wednesday from Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis regarding her handling of the criminal case against President Donald Trump. The appearance grew increasingly heated as Willis refused to soften her responses to lawmakers’ questions about her prosecution decisions and personal conduct.
As CNN reports, the district attorney’s microphone was temporarily shut off during the proceedings after she spoke beyond what committee members considered the parameters of their inquiry. Willis confronted the panel directly at one point, stating, “Let me tell you why this is such a damn joke,” while being questioned by Republican state Sen. Greg Dolazal.
The Georgia Senate Special Committee on Investigations, which formed in early 2024, includes six Republicans and three Democrats. Though the committee lacks direct disciplinary power over Willis, it intends to publish a comprehensive report detailing its investigation’s conclusions. The panel has authority to propose legislative changes based on its findings.
Questions focused heavily on Willis’s appointment of Nathan Wade to serve as special prosecutor in the election interference case. That professional relationship became controversial after revelations emerged about a romantic connection between the two, which eventually led to Willis being disqualified from prosecuting Trump.
Willis responded to intense questioning by drawing attention to the personal toll of her work. “Why don’t you investigate how many times my house has been swatted?” she asked lawmakers. “Why don’t you investigate how many times they’ve called me the N-word?” She elaborated further, testifying, “You all have been trying to intimidate me for five years, which is why I have not been able to live in my house for five years, because the N-word has been written on my house, thousands of threats have come to my office.”
Former Georgia Gov. Roy Barnes, serving as Willis’s attorney, condemned the committee’s investigation as a “witch hunt.” Willis made clear she has no intention of stepping aside. “I ain’t going to quit in a month because somebody threatened me. I took an oath to do the right thing. People came into my community and committed a crime and I indicted them, and rest assured, if someone else comes in my community and commits a crime, I will indict them again,” she said.
When Barnes asked about conversations with Wade during his hiring process, Willis dismissed the inquiry, responding sharply, “It’s a dumbass question.”
The committee continues investigating allegations that Willis and Wade personally profited from their relationship.
