Bridgett Moore keeps a powerful promise to her father
*File this under “See What Happens When You Put Your Mind to it.” Bridgett Moore, a 40-year-old single mom from Birmingham, Alabama, has lost more than 200 pounds. Her journey began with a heartfelt promise to her father, who was dying of pancreatic cancer. On Christmas Day 2025, PEOPLE magazine shared her story in an emotional exclusive.
“Bridgett, get healthy. I don’t want you to be sick like me,” her father, James, told her shortly before he passed. That moment changed everything. Moore says the memory of their conversation still motivates her every day.
At 385 pounds, she faced diabetes and heartbreak
At age 27, Moore was diagnosed with diabetes and weighed 385 pounds. Just months later, her father entered hospice with terminal cancer. The timing forced her to confront both grief and her own health struggles. It would take years, but she never forgot what he asked of her.
“You don’t want to break a promise to someone, and they’re gone,” Moore told PEOPLE. That sense of duty, wrapped in love, became her daily fuel for change.

Small steps led to life-changing results
Moore didn’t transform overnight. She began by working with a dietitian and using the MyFitnessPal app to track meals—an easy, free tool she discovered through her church. This helped her make consistent, manageable progress.
Later, she decided to undergo gastric surgery, which accelerated her weight loss. She has now dropped from 385 pounds to just over 200 pounds, reaching 185. Her progress is steady, and her determination unwavering.
Family remains at the heart of her journey
Much of Moore’s motivation comes from her daughter, Amiyah, now 7 years old. The two enjoy daily walks together, often talking about James—Amiyah’s grandfather—during those quiet moments. These walks are not only exercise but an emotional bonding time.
Moore says setting a positive example for her daughter has been key. “I want her to see what self-love looks like,” she explained. Her journey is just as much about emotional healing as it is about physical transformation.

Travel, confidence, and a new chapter of life
Now in her 40s, Moore leads a vibrant, active life. She’s taken vacations, including a memorable trip to Belize, and says she finally feels free in her body. Her energy, outlook, and wardrobe have all changed—along with her confidence.
What started as a promise has become a lifestyle. Moore says she now embraces every moment, viewing her transformation as a tribute to the man who loved her most and wanted more for her. “He gave me my why,” she said.
Her story inspires others facing grief and change
Moore’s story resonated with readers across the country when PEOPLE published it on Christmas Day. The timing added emotional depth, reminding readers that even in times of grief, there is space for healing and hope.
As people reflect on their health and goals entering the new year, Moore’s example is a shining light. Her path proves that change is possible with love, patience, and purpose. And that a promise made in sorrow can lead to strength, joy, and a new life.
