*Dacia Petrie, a UI and web designer, has developed an innovative app, Black Nile, to simplify the process of shopping from Black-owned businesses.
As Afro Tech reports, Black Nile currently lists over 3,000 Black-owned businesses spanning more than 40 categories, including skincare, hair, nail, and feminine care products, as well as restaurants, grocery stores, hotels, and luxury fashion. The app integrates Google Maps and allows customers to leave reviews and rate their experiences, ensuring accountability and quality service.
“I saw somebody in the comments saying that they’re looking for a Black Amazon. Sista, I’m a hold your hand when I say this. This ain’t Amazon. It’s Black Nile,” Petrie stated in a TikTok video, emphasizing the platform’s unique identity.
Petrie created Black Nile with usability in mind.
“I created this with the intention to make shopping with Black-owned businesses as easy as possible,” she explained.

“I am a UI designer and web designer, and I noticed that there are a lot of Black-owned directories, but many of them aren’t as user-friendly or optimized for our mobile devices,” Petrie said. “I saw someone in the comments saying that they were looking for something that’s a little bit more techy and something a little bit more user-friendly, and this is perfect.”
Black-owned businesses interested in joining Black Nile can visit the app’s business tab for instructions on how to be featured.
